Why is everyone so bad at dressing like Muggles in Harry Potter?

Especially the adults. The kids seem to an above average job.

It’s a question that has always bugged me a little bit. Why are all the Witches and Wizards in Harry Potter so bad at dressing like Muggles? In particular the adults?

This is something that was more obvious in the books than the movies. References were made repeatedly throughout the books at how the majority of Witches and Wizards had really poor dress sense when it came to wearing muggle clothes. It actually became almost a trademark way of spotting a Witch or Wizard, just look out for the really badly dressed person.

But the adults always seemed to do a worse job at it than the kids. Let’s take the Weasley family for example. Ron, Fred and George, although they didn’t have perfect dress sense, where better at looking like Muggles than Mr and Mrs Weasley everwhere.

Yet if they were not too bad at it why were their parents so bad?

Surely Mr and Mrs Weasley bought their clothes and taught them how to dress, right? Ok, yes, as they got older they probably did it themselves but when they were younger it would have been Mr and Mrs Weasley in charge of what the wore.

Therefore they should have been as bad as Mr and Mrs Weasley. Or Mr and Mrs Weasley should not have been as bad.

Is it a game?

So what is happening? Is there an unspoken rule, or some strange game that all Witches and Wizards like to play on us Muggles?

"“Hey everyone, let’s see how badly we can dress and count how many strange looks we get from the Muggles.”“Yeah, awesome sounds great!”"

Seems odd right?

Then again. Maybe it’s a parent thing. Like Muggle parents, maybe Mr and Mrs Weasley dress so badly because they are more concerned with their children than themselves. There is certainly no short of kids out there looking like they have been suited and booted by a professional tailor and yet mum or dad is still rocking their Pyjamas when taking their kid to school.

That wouldn’t explain the Witches and Wizards without children though.

Being honest I don’t think we may ever get a definitive answer to this. Pretty sure it is just one of those things that emerge when writing a compelling and amazing story. Maybe Rowling will elaborate one day, and if she already has I apologize now for not realizing.

It is a nice little brain teaser, however. Why can the kids dress better than their parents when it’s highly likely, especially in their younger years, they have learnt how to dress from Mum and Dad?
