Oscars 2018: The Shape of Water wins Best Picture

With 13 Academy Award nominations this year, The Shape of Water won four Oscars including Best Picture. 

The film also won for Best Director, Best Original Score, and Best Production Design. With a range of genres, this year’s Best Picture nominees included Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Here were the 2018 Oscar nominees for Best Picture:

Call Me by Your Name: Set in Italy during 1983, the romance between a 17-year-old boy and an older student blossoms as they discover their desire for each other over a summer holiday.

Darkest Hour: Directed by Joe Wright and starring Gary Oldman, the Darkest Hour follows the story of Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain, as he tackles political trials at the height of WWII.

Dunkirk: Directed by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk followed the story of the troops in WWII who were trapped on the beaches of Dunkirk in 1940.

Get Out: This horror movie was written and directed by Jordan Peele. It tells a story about an interracial couple and the secrets the girlfriend and her family hide.

Lady Bird: Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird is a coming-of-age story about a teenager and her uneasy relationship with her mother.

Phantom Thread: This film tells the story of renowned English dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his creative journey in fashion.

The Post: Stephen Spielberg directed this movie based on Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, The Washington Post. It brings to light the career risks and trials she had to face in order to tell the truth against the US government.

The Shape of Water: Guillermo del Toro directed a film that tells a story of love between a woman and a half-man, half-fish creature.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: After her daughter was murdered and without justice, a mother rents three billboards to raise attention and call for action.

In his Oscar’s acceptance speech, Guillermo del Toro dedicated his award to the young filmmakers of the world.

“I was a kid enamored with movies, growing up in Mexico,” del Toro said. “I thought this could never happen. It happens. And I want to tell you, everyone that is dreaming of using fantasy to tell the stories about the things that are real in the world today, you can do it.”
