Oscars 2018: Top 5 moments that made us say “OMG”

For a night filled with glitz and glam, the 2018 Academy Awards had a few surprising moments that made the show extra special.

On the boring to exciting scale, this year’s Oscars fell somewhere in the middle. Jimmy Kimmel returned to host the show once again, and everyone involved worked to guarantee another Oscars mix-up would not happen. We know that’s how it’s supposed to be, but aren’t those tiny little “OMG” moments sometimes the best? Although nothing came close to last year’s Moonlight scandal or Ellen’s web-breaking selfie, there were still some exciting, must-see moments.

Helen Mirren presented a jet ski

Another year, another broken promise of trying to keep the show short. Even though that didn’t happen, at least host Jimmy Kimmel offered a special incentive to the Oscar winner with the shortest speech. The winner would receive a $18,000 jet ski presented Vanna White-style by Helen Mirren. The fortunate prize-winner of the night: costume designer Mark Bridges. Enjoy the jet ski, Bridges.

Tiffany Haddish kept a promise

HOLLYWOOD, CA – MARCH 04: Actors Tiffany Haddish (L) and Maya Rudolph speak onstage during the 90th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood

If you’ve seen actress Tiffany Haddish’s Saturday Night Live monologue from November, you may have bet money on her to wear a specific dress. On the red carpet, she paid tribute to her father in  a beautiful Eritrean gown. But inside the theater, she donned her prized Alexander McQueen dress she wore while delivering that infamous SNL monologue. On SNL, she said it was such a good dress that of course she’d wear it to any occasion: wedding, funeral, and now, the Oscars.

Gal Gadot loved to hold hands

Some might say the big “OMG” moment of the night was when Kimmel delivered a group of celebrities over to a neighboring theater to surprise a few moviegoers. Yeah, that happened. But can we talk about how Gal Gadot graciously took Margot Robbies hand on the way there? As Gadot got up to follow Kimmel and other celebs like Mark Hamill and Lin-Manuel Miranda to the theater, Robbie quickly ran up behind her to join along.

It’s Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn together. Could there be a better DC movie?

Lakeith Stanfield was ready for winners to get out

This one was a little weird, but something to remember nonetheless. Jimmy Kimmel brought Get Out star Lakeith Stanfield in as a warning to “get out” if an Oscar winner’s speech runs to long — a reenactment of his famous scene from the movie. “That was so weird,” he tweeted after doing the bit. In the audience you could see director Jordan Peele had a good laugh at it though, so it’s all good.

Jordan Peele made Oscars history

Speaking of Jordan Peele, someone made Oscars history last night. Peele, up against Guillermo del Toro, Greta Gerwig and others in the Original Screenplay category, came out on top. This win made the comedian-turned writer/director the first African-American person to win the award. Moments after, Peele tweeted about what had just went down.

Yes, Jordan Peele. You certainly did win an Oscar. And you deserved it!
