After an acting career spanning over four decades, Gary Oldman picks up his very first Oscar.

The 90th Academy Awards were held last night. All the big names were in attendance for the biggest award show in film and it was another year of moments to remember. Especially for Gary Oldman.

Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the Harry Potter film franchise picked up the Oscar for Best Actor for his leading role in Darkest Hour. It is his first ever Oscar win. He was nominated in 2012 for his role in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy but never took home the award.

More from Harry Potter

Oldman had already picked up awards at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs for Darkest Hour and had been tipped as the favourite for the Oscar. There was some mild concern that he would be overlooked due to past accusations made against him but that does not appear to have come into effect at all.

Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour is set in the early days of World War II. Oldman portrays British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who is newly appointed to his position. It is a perilous time where a crucial decision must be made. Does he decide to negotiate with Adolf Hitler or stand up and fight?
