Oscars 2018: Sam Rockwell wins Best Supporting Actor
The time has come for the Oscars pick for Best Supporting Actor. With great nominees all around, it isn’t really a surprise that Sam Rockwell took home the award.
The Oscars are here and with a pretty amazing supporting actor category, it was a hard choice. Richard Jenkins had quite the turn in The Shape of Water, and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri clearly had something right because it has two nominees! Then there is Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project and Christopher Plummer taking on Getty in All the Money in the World. Truly though, this category belongs to Sam Rockwell for his role as Dixon in Three Billboards.
The 2018 Oscar nominees for Supporting Actor were:
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project: Running a hotel in Florida, Bobby finds himself connecting with the tenants. It is a movie filled with great performances and honestly, in any other year, this would have been Dafoe’s to win.
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Harrelson plays the officer who is responsible for the case of Angela Hayes. When Angela is found raped and murdered, her mother, Mildred, pays to have three billboards outside of town relay a message about how she didn’t think the chief of police was doing the most to find who did this to her daughter.
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water: The Shape of Water is a movie that focuses on love. Whether that is between Elisa and the fish man or her friends and her, is up to the viewer. Giles has his own love story but that is more about his struggle as a gay man in the period of the film as well as his relationship with Elisa. It is a very subtle performance but one that leaves you wanting to hope Giles finds his own happiness.
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World: The story of this movie is honestly more interesting than the film itself. Originally a Kevin Spacey role, Christopher Plummer took over the role as John Paul Getty and ended up being nominated for an Oscar. The movie itself follows the story of the Getty grandson being kidnapped and the ransom required to guarantee his safety.
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: Again, following the movie of Angela Hayes’s murder, Sam Rockwell plays Dixon. His character isn’t that likable, as he is racist and it takes him almost dying to see the error in his ways. Though his role may not be the best person, he did have the best performance of this year.

The 2018 Oscar winner for Supporting Actor is Sam Rockwell. His speech was speedy, as he wanted to win that ket ski Jimmy Kimmel promised during the award show’s intro. In true Rockwell fashion, his speech was fun, quirky, and he made sure to share his love of movies, while also thanking crew, cast, and his love, Leslie Bibb! Congratulations, Sam!
