In a season filled with amazing performances, the Best Actress category faced tough competition. Luckily for Frances McDormand, she took home the golden award!

The Oscars are Hollywood’s biggest night. Each year, we get to see all our favorites come out to support each other and their work. This year, the Best Actress category wasn’t exactly an easy one to win. With Sally Hawkins bringing Elisa to life in The Shape of Water and Frances McDormand giving an amazing performance as Mildred Hayes in Three Billboards, this was a year of one brilliant performance after another.

The 2018 Oscar nominees for Best Actress included:

Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water: Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is a mute cleaning woman at a high-tech facility. When a new project comes in, she finds herself falling in love with a fish man who is the subject of government intrigue. For a performance that has no speaking role, it’s pretty incredible to see the emotion she’s able to convey.

Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: When her daughter is found dead, Mildred Hayes makes it her duty to keep the case in the eyes of the local police. She does so by buying three billboards and sharing a message to the chief to continue to search for the killer. Honestly, she deserves to win as she was both emotional and fierce in this movie.

Margot Robbie, I, Tonya: Tonya Harding has a bad name when, in reality, it was Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckhardt who were seemingly responsible for the knee-breaking of Nancy Kerrigan. Margot, who also produced the film, is incredible in this role. While I want her to take home the Oscar, I know it wasn’t likely she’d win tonight.

Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird: Have you ever fought with your mother about what was best for you? Well then you might relate to Christine “Lady Bird” in the film Lady Bird. Saoirse Ronan, who is no stranger to the Oscars, deserves this nomination and so much more for her portrayal. It was perfect for a young girl and honestly one of the best films of the year.

Meryl Streep, The Post: A woman who is in charge of the Washington Post, Katharine Graham is an inspiration. Based on the publishing of the Pentagon papers, The Post is really just a showcase for Meryl’s performance. She is incredible in the movie but really, when isn’t Meryl incredible?
