Oscars 2018: Allison Janney wins Best Supporting Actress

This year’s Oscars got something right and that’s Allison Janney winning for Best Supporting Actress! And it wasn’t an easy category.

The Oscars had quite the Best Supporting Actress category this year. From veterans to first-time actress nominees (like Mary J. Blige), this category had tough competition for all. Octavia Spencer is the only actress in this group who has been nominated for an Oscar before, and to boot a winner because of her role in The Help.

It’s surprising that this is a year of first-time nominees. All of the performances were amazing (especially with standouts like Mary J. Blige and Lesley Manville) but honestly,  Allison Janney deserves to win the Oscar for her turn as Lavona Harding in I, Tonya.

The 2018 Oscar nominees for Supporting Actress were:

Mary J. Blige, MudboundIt is the singer’s first big acting role and she was nominated for an Oscar. That says a lot about Mary J. Blige in Mudbound. The movie itself is easily available because it is, surprisingly, a Netflix movie that has gotten a lot of recognition.

Allison Janney, I, TonyaMy personal favorite, Allison Janney has quite the turn as Lavona Harding in I, Tonya. A movie that focuses on the rise and fall of Tonya Harding based on interviews with her and Jeff Gillooly, it is quite the film to sit back and watch with some popcorn. While we think it should have been nominated for Best Picture, Janney is a shining moment in the film and definitely deserves the win.

Lesley Manville, Phantom ThreadIn maybe one of the most confusing movies of the year, Phantom Thread had quite a twist. Lesley Manville, who played Cyril, gives quite the performance. Sister to Reynolds Woodcock, she puts up with quite a bit of his neurotic tendencies and gives some of the best lines in the entire film.

Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird: An important look at the relationship between mothers and their daughters, Lady Bird offers an insightful look at that very difficult relationship. The film is a coming of age story of a girl in the early 2000s and how her desire to go to New York strains her relationship with her mother. Laurie plays Marion, Christine (nicknamed “Lady Bird”)’s mother and gives an amazing performance.

Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water: In a movie that is about love, The Shape of Water has an array of performances that you’ll want to talk about after seeing it. One of those roles belongs to Octavia Spencer as Zelda.

Sometimes, the Oscars don’t get things right. We all have our opinions and we fight back and forth about who should take home the award. This year, though, everything was as it should be. Janney Janney, who brought Lavona Harding to life in I, Tonya won for Best Supporting Actress.

“I did this all myself,” Janney joked as she took to the stage, but then went on to thank all those who helped her with I, Tonya. It was a much deserved win and one we’ll surely be talking about tomorrow!
