Will Gary Oldman be going home with an Oscar?
By Callum Gunn
This weekend the winners of the Oscars will be announced, will Gary Oldman be one of them?
Gary Oldman could be the receipt of the Best Actor Academy Award this weekend. The former Harry Potter star was nominated for his role in Darkest Hour as Winston Churchill. Oldman’s fellow nominees for the award are, Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name, Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread, Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out and Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
As things stand Oldman is marked as the favorite to win the award. Experts across the TV and movie industry have given their insight, with the consensus that Oldman will be the one to win. Bookmakers have the actor as the favorite as well. Odds for Oldman to win have been slashed compared to his fellow nominees.

The Oscars and #MeToo
Despite all of the above Goldman could be going home empty-handed due to the accusations made against him in 2001 for domestic violence. In the year of #MeToo, the Oscars may make the decision to overlook Oldman no matter how much he deserves the award.
Oscars are already in the spotlight. Casey Affleck, who won the 2017 award for Best Actor for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, withdrew from attending this year’s award ceremony. Normally the recipient of the Best Actor award the previous year presents the Oscar to the winner of the Best Actress the following year. Affleck, who was sued twice in 2010 for sexual harassment, brought the Oscars in question and in the light of the current #MeToo movement it is a wonder if he withdrew willingly or was told to withdraw.

With this in mind, you can see why it may not be a straightforward win for Oldman despite what the bookies and experts are saying.
