Wonder Woman 2: 3 reasons why Kristen Wiig should keep her paws off Cheetah

Maybe director Patty Jenkins just wants to test our faith in her. Why else would she consider Kristen Wiig for the role of Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2?

According to reports, Warner Bros. wants comedian Kristen Wiig for the role of Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. Though she may look the part, Wiig doesn’t exactly scream “main villain.” Actually, she’d probably make a better Circe than Cheetah, but since that’s been debunked, we have to make do.

Sarah Paulson, who would be perfect, previously expressed interest in the role. So, how did we get to Kristen Wiig all of a sudden?

More importantly, why?

Obviously, I have nothing against Kristen Wiig. However, from a business perspective, making her the villain doesn’t seem like a smart decision.

She’s not a dramatic actor

Kristen Wiig is a comedian. A wonderful, wonderful comedian. Though she certainly tried her hand at dramatic roles, audiences prefer it when she cracks a joke.

Of course, that’s not to say that Wonder Woman wasn’t funny. In fact, what made it even funnier was how it offset the budding romance and tender moments of the film. Chris Pine and Gal Gadot held their own with both comedic and dramatic elements. Can Wiig do that? Or will we just be waiting for her to break character and start laughing?

The character of Cheetah in the comics isn’t a comedic character. In recent comics (DC Comic’s Rebirth run), she’s Wonder Woman’s blood-hungry foe, so I’m not so where the humor lies unless Wonder Woman 2 plans to go full Santa Clarita Diet.

She doesn’t post big numbers at the box office

Sadly, Wonder Woman‘s longevity at the box office and positive reviews didn’t help it reach a billion dollars, the expected goal of a blockbuster film.

We can attribute Kristen Wiig’s biggest box office numbers to either animated films or supporting roles. Although the cast of the first Wonder Woman film included some big names, they weren’t big enough to boost Wonder Woman‘s earnings.

So, if we can’t have someone with strong box office draw, can’t we at least have an actress with a bit more cinematic esteem?

Ghostbusters fallout

I don’t condone how the Internet treated the Ghostbusters reboot, but it happened. And the same audience that skewered that film is the audience that Wonder Woman, unfortunately, needs in order to hit a billion. It’s an elusive goal for the DC films, but one they so desperately need.

We all want Wonder Woman 2 to be as successful as it can possibly be.

Despite how much Wonder Woman accomplished with people’s perception of the character and female superhero films, it still has a long way to go. Casting Kristen Wiig feels more like an unnecessary obstacle than a boast-worthy addition.

Wonder Woman 2 hits theaters on Nov. 1, 2019.
