Women to Admire: Carrie Fisher

facebooktwitterreddit

Carrie Fisher is one of those women who reminds us that we don’t have to take no for an answer. And that’s why she is one of our Women to Admire!

As a small girl who loves to act and write and who doesn’t want to apologize for the things I say, Carrie Fisher became an idol to me. Yes, she was Princess Leia and taught an entire generation of women to stand up for themselves, but she was so much more than that.

Carrie was one of those celebrities who made you want to be a better person. Whether it was speaking up for yourself or getting the help you need, she was always so vocal about her struggles so that she could help those suffering in the same way she was.

If you haven’t read her books, you definitely should. They’re incredible insights into Carrie’s mind and how she tackled her own issues. I think that’s the most impressive thing about her: She used her struggles to help those who needed to see their problems in someone else.

Carrie had bipolar disorder and didn’t let it stop her. Yes, she struggled and self-medicated, but that doesn’t mean she was self-destructive. She worked hard for everything in her life and made sure to make those around her (and her fans) feel like they had someone to turn to.

She doctored tons of your favorite movies while writing her own novels and films and continually starring in things. Basically, Carrie was pretty amazing.

Meryl Streep shared a quote from Carrie after she died that truly speaks to her legacy: “Take your broken heart, make it into art.” And that’s what we should all do. She inspired us all to pick ourselves up and move on through life.

We love and miss you, Carrie. You were a light in a pretty dark world and we know somewhere, you’re still tweeting in emojis that we have to decode. Love you, Space Mommy.
