5 actresses of color who’d make a great agent in the Men in Black spin-off
By Mia Johnson
A new report says a Men in Black spin-off is in the works with a woman of color to take the lead. Here’s our picks for the MIB co-star.
It’s time to retire Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as our favorite Men in Black agents. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Men in Black spin-off is in the works for next year. The film, likely to be directed by The Fate of the Furious’ F. Gary Gray, is supposedly looking for a “white male, a female of color and an older man,” according to The Hollywood Reporter story.
While still in early negotiations, Chris Hemsworth could be co-starring in the film. So who should be his on-screen companion? We have a few thoughts of our own.

Tiffany Haddish
If the movie is looking for the kind of dynamic that Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones had as Agents J and K, Tiffany Haddish could be the one. After appearing on a few episodes of The Carmichael Show on NBC, the comedian hit it big with the 2017 movie Girls Trip. Her character was arguably the best out of the entire cast, and she definitely knows how to be a scene stealer. If Tiffany Haddish suits up against the aliens of the universe, they better watch out.

Constance Wu
As one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People last year, who wouldn’t let the amazing Constance Wu star in their movie? Wu is best known for her role in the ABC show Fresh Off the Boat where she plays the zany yet well-meaning mother of the family. Wu is a standout actress because she represents the few Asian-American actresses in Hollywood and the even fewer number of those women in comedy. She’ll star in the movie Crazy Rich Asians later this year, which means she’ll definitely be in high demand for more feature films in the future.

Mindy Kaling
Kelly Kapoor, Mindy Lahiri and now Mrs. Who. Mindy Kaling has come far since her days on The Office, but it’s still a landmark role that certainly launched her career. From there, she created her own TV show, The Mindy Project, and has starred in the big Disney films Inside Out and A Wrinkle in Time. Later this year, we’ll see her in the all-female led Ocean’s 8. Kaling’s showcased that she’s got her own unique sense of humor that she brings to all her projects, and who wouldn’t want to see Kelly Kapoor battle against a couple of aliens? Michael Scott would be totally jealous.

Gina Rodriguez
It’s clear that after appearing in the CW hit Jane the Virgin, Gina Rodriguez needs to be in every movie and TV show. Can we have that, please? She’s great as the title character of the CW show, and she’s recently added a few other projects to her plate, including a romantic comedy where she’ll produce and take the lead. Rodriguez is passionate, fun and full of creativity. In the movie, her shining personality would probably be enough of a Neuralyzer against any person who catches a glimpse of an alien.

Leslie Jones
Hands down, there are few people as funny as Leslie Jones. Another ofTIME’s 100 Most Influential People, she got her big break on Saturday Night Live and has since made a name for herself in the entertainment industry. In 2016, she starred in the Ghostbusters reboot with Chris Hemsworth. Though billed as part of the main cast, she definitely could have had a larger role in the film. Taking the lead in a movie like Men in Black would be a great way for Jones to have a bit of fun on the big screen. With Hemsworth showing off his improv comedy skills in Ghostbusters and Thor: Ragnarok, it’s likely the two would make one great, gut-bustingly hilarious team.
Next: Wonder Woman 2: Does it need a main female villain?
Of course, there’s always room for other actresses as well, both famous and undiscovered. This film is moving in the right direction by hiring a diverse cast, and the official cast announcement will likely be underway soon. The movie is set to debut June 14, 2019.
