Quidditch came to Wichita Falls and it’s just as good as you’d expect

Muggles got the chance to experience Quidditch over the weekend, and it was just as much fun as the witches and wizards of Harry Potter make it look.

Admit it; when you first saw Quidditch in all its glory in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone you wanted to play. In fact, the moment you read about it, you wanted it to become a sport. Now if only you could fly.

Well, rather than being able to fly, the game has been adapted for all the Muggles out there. The US Quidditch Southwest Regional Championships came to Wichita Falls for 2018 and everyone got a chance to experience the game. Whether they wanted to play or just watch like the rest of Hogwarts, there was an option for all.

Yes, there was a quaffle and snitch

Twenty-four teams took part in the Southwest Regional Championships, with 10 teams moving through to the next round (eight collegiate and two adult community teams). They will all go onto the US Quidditch Cup 11, which will take place at Round Rock, Texas on April 14 and 15.

None of the players flew, but they did have broomsticks and it was just as aggressive as you would expect based on watching the game on TV. Players use yellow sticks to run around with, looking like the brooms that Harry and co. use for their games. In place of the quaffle is a volleyball. It all seems quite tame and expected, right?

But what about the snitch? Is there even one when we don’t have balls that come to life?

Well, yes! A person dresses up in yellow with a Velcro tail. They have to run around the pitch, while the rest of the game is in progress and it’s up to the seekers to catch the snitch. The snitch is caught when the Velcro tail is pulled off.

Honestly, this sounds like awesome fun! It’s certainly a workout and the perfect way to mix the fandom and sport. Who said us Harry Potter geeks couldn’t have fun in sport? Now we just have to get the Primark gym clothes for training!
