No, Essexville residents, you don’t need to practise your Patronus charms

Essexville Department of Public Safety got a call about Dementors, but it turns out the Harry Potter villain hasn’t appeared in the park.

It’s not every day that the Essexville Department of Public Safety gets a call about a fictional villain, so it’s not surprising that this call made the news. One Harry Potter fan made the call about a potential Dementor in Smith Park. They obviously haven’t practised their Patronus charms enough to get rid of the creature themselves.

Or they have and the charm just didn’t work, because it wasn’t actually a Dementor! The department later took to Facebook to share the park was perfectly safe from the Harry Potter creatures, as it was just a black trash bag. All are apparently “accounted for at Azkaban,” which is always good to know!

Pick up your litter!!!

However, this does bring up the problem with trash. There’s absolutely no reason to pick it up yourself.

Looking at the trash bag, it’s easy to see why a fan could have mistaken the bag for a Dementor. But if it was really a Dementor, there’d be no point calling the police. You’d need Harry and his friends with their Patronus charms.

Fortunately, the police weren’t annoyed at the mistake of the Dementor/trash bag. While getting the message out that picking up your trash is the right thing to do, the guys behind the social media team used it as a good opportunity to spread the word further than their own county. After all, I’m in Canada and have heard about it and Harry Potter fans elsewhere will find out about the viral message.

So, while you don’t need to practise your Patronus charm just yet, please do pick up your trash, wherever you are in the world!
