Was Harry growing up to be an Auror really the right thing?

Why an Auror? Surely he would have wanted to do something else after everything he went through?

Do you think it was right how Harry grew up to be an Auror? That after everything that happened to him throughout his upbringing and at Hogwarts that he would dedicate his life to chasing and bringing down Dark Witches and Wizards?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s understandable why he would go down this route. After fighting against Voldemort and his Death Eaters for so long it probably only felt natural for Harry to go down this path. As if it was expected of him.

But, what about Harry doing something else, what about teaching? Becoming a teacher would have been much more natural, even more logical for Harry and certainly much more fun.

Harry, The Defense Against the Dark Art Teacher

Not many of you will agree with this, actually, probably 1% of you will, but, Harry growing up and becoming The Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher just seems much more fitting.

Harry was first of all forced into the whole Wizarding war with Voldemort. He never had a choice about it and he hated it. Harry mentioned numerous times that he wished to be normal, whatever that might be.

So continuing to fight and capture Dark Witches and Wizards seems just a tad odd. You would have thought that after it was over he would have thought; ‘Great, I can live a normal-ish life now and choose my own path.’

Yes, Harry expressed his interest in becoming an Auror while at Hogwarts. But was there really any other options for him at the time? With the impending Wizarding war just around the corner, there wasn’t much focus on what other options were available.

Then, when Professor McGonagall made it her life mission to ensure Harry would become an Auror just to stick it up to Professor Umbridge, all other cards where firmly removed from the table. Harry really had little options presented to him.

Harry loved teaching

What Harry did love was teaching. When he taught Defence Against the Dark Arts for the DA it was one of his happiest moments. Seeing everyone progressing and learning magic, supposedly not possible at their age (Patronus Charm), was a really big deal for Harry.

So becoming The Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor would just seem much more a better fit. He would then be able to continue that enjoyment he got in DA seeing younger Witches and Wizards learn and progress throughout their time at Hogwarts.

Maybe even producing better-prepared students than ever before. If Harry was able to teach the Patronus Charm to so many, in such little time and in such terrible circumstances, imagine what seven years of education with him would accomplish.

Mischief Managed

Then there is Neville. Herbology Professor of Hogwarts. Imagine the mischief those two would get up to together as Hogwarts professors. They would easily be the fun professors at Hogwarts. Playing pranks on both Student and Teachers, McGonagall trying desperately to keep them in line while secretly enjoying their antics.

Harry could have then continued with Quidditch as well. Maybe becoming a coach for one of the teams. Passing on wisdom and advice while secretly sabotaging the Slytherin Quidditch team.

Nope, while it is fully understandable that Harry became an Auror, just nope. Harry would have been much better as The Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.
