Black Lightning episode 6 recap and review: Gambi, how dare you?

However Gambi spent his time in the past, some of his own secrets outed someone else’s in Black Lightning episode 6, “Three Sevens: The Book of Thunder.”

Since he was first introduced, it’s been apparent that Gambi is the one to watch in Black Lightning, simply because he was a mystery. Although he seems a little less Alfred and a little more Snoke when it comes to his shady past, he has good intentions. Yet, his pact with Lady Eve to keep the Pierce family safe aside, Anissa’s growing interest in her grandfather’s research on metahumans brought things to a head in last night’s episode.

To dig deeper into Alvin Pierce’s research, she hands over some of the files to her mother. But once Lynn starts looking into it, Lady Eve sends the Plummer gang to retrieve the files at the lab. Per her agreement with Gambi, they aren’t supposed to harm Lynn. But when Anissa arrived (to confide in her mother and reveal her powers), a confrontation starts.

Though Thunder makes quick work of the thugs, Black Lightning also appears. Mistaking Anissa for Lynn’s attacker, the two begin to fight. For a relatively new superhero, Anissa held her own and it’s clear she’s really been working on her breathing techniques. Part of her power set includes an invulnerability to bullets, too.

However, Black Lightning eventually bests her. (Luckily, he recovered from the previous episode’s injuries he sustained, albeit a little slower than usual.) Upon realizing that he just whipped his daughter around the room, Jefferson reveals himself as Black Lightning.

Of course, this also puts Lynn in an awkward position.

In order to discourage Black Lightning from seeking revenge against Tobias, she admits that she was being selfish by asking him to give up his vigilante life. Now that she knows that Anissa is powerful as well, she may double-down on her decision to keep them grounded.

Again, this is all Gambi’s fault. If he was more forthright with the Pierce family, a lot of this could’ve been avoided. Obviously, I’m glad Anissa knows her father’s secrets. However, it looks like Gambi’s deal with Lady Eve will continue to put Black Lightning (and Thunder) in more precarious positions than need be.
