This fan-made Doctor Who title sequence is so good it should be the real thing
By Lacy Baugher
We don’t know what the official Doctor Who season 11 opening titles will look like yet. But this fan-made version is so good, you’ll wish it was the real thing.
By the time Doctor Who returns for season 11 later this year, a lot about the show will look different: Jodie Whittaker will play the series’ first female Doctor, there are three new companions, the season runtime will come in a little shorter and the series’ logo will have a whole new look. (Oh, and there’s an entirely new crop of folks running things behind the scenes to boot.)
And while we know about what a lot of those changes will look like – the BBC already named the new companions and released the new logo – some we don’t. And one of the biggest outstanding what-ifs is what the season’s new opening titles will look like during the Whittaker/Chris Chibnall era.
That hasn’t stopped one enterprising, very creative artist, however. Dave Burgess, a designer known on Twitter as @CloisterofDoom, has put together the most perfect opening sequence for season 11.
Isn’t this gorgeous?
It has the same feel as most of the modern-era title treatments, but still manages to be completely its own thing. (And, thank goodness, that unnecessary steampunk vibe from Peter Capaldi’s last year in the TARDIS is gone.) The new logo looks great. And though it’s a big strange to not whiz through the iconic vortex, that’s part of what makes this feel like something new altogether.
If the BBC is going for a fresh feel for Whittaker’s Doctor, it could make a lot of different stylistic choices – for better or worse. My only real complaint – which is kind of a large one – is that the TARDIS isn’t obviously present. I feel like that’s been such a staple of modern-era Doctor Who that they should at least pop it in there somewhere.
Even the official BBC America Doctor Who Twitter account acknowledged how great it is:
Unfortunately, the intro’s guess at a title for the new season’s first episode is just that – a guess. We have no idea what the season 11 premiere might be called. “A New Dawn” is a pretty fantastic idea though, particularly given how much the general marketing thus far pushes the “fresh start” angle of Season 11. It’s not wrong either – we’re not just getting the first female Doctor, we’re getting a a new showrunner, a largely new group of writers and new companions. Why not just really go for it with the title, too?
I mean, they called Matt Smith’s first outing “The Eleventh Hour.” They are definitely not above the extremely obvious naming convention here and there.
Next: When will Doctor Who season 11 premiere? Not when we thought it might
Doctor Who will return at some point this autumn – in October, it looks like – on BBC One and BBC America.
