Why did no one tell Harry about Platform 9 ¾?
By Callum Gunn
And no, Mrs Weasley telling Harry does not count!
You’ve got to hand it to the magical community; they know how to keep Muggles from finding out about the Wizarding world.
From the Ministry of Magic to St. Mungo’s hospital to Diagon Alley. If you want to use the Muggle entrance it involves an elaborate process that no Muggle in their right mind would ever think of. And Platform 9 ¾ is no exception.

In order to gain access to the platform to board the Hogwarts express you need to pass through a solid brick wall between platforms nine and ten at Kings Cross Station, London. Another elaborate process that no Muggle would ever attempt.
But why did no one tell Harry about it?
Did Hagrid just forget?
Hagrid was in a rush at the time. Not only was he trusted with the charge of getting Harry to Hogwarts but he also charged with delivering the Philosopher’s Stone to Hogwarts. Not that we knew this at the time.
In his haste to get everything done, it could have easily slipped his mind to give Harry all of the details. The movies show Hagrid escorting Harry to King Cross Station, giving him his ticket with the platform details on it and then leaving the station. In the book the Dursely’s take Harry to Kings Cross and leave him alone, clutching his ticket, laughing at how there is no such thing as platform9 ¾.
In each instance, Harry is not told about the entrance and if it was not for Mrs Weasley showing up, Harry might never have made it onto the platform. All because Hagrid very likely, forget to tell Harry what to do.
Or is it?
It does raise the question of what happens to other Muggle-born children attending Hogwarts for the first time. Do they get a magical escort to the platform? Are they given clear instructions on how to board the platform?
Or do the magical community have a darker side to it? Could this be an initiation for all newcomers to the magical world? Maybe, instead of telling everyone how to board the platform properly all of the Hogwarts teachers are standing off to one side, completely invisible. Secretly laughing at the nervous and failed attempts at trying to board the platform.
It’s not likely to be an initiation test, Hagrid forgetting to give Harry the full details is the most likely scenario but it is a fun idea to think that this might be the case. After all, can you honestly say you wouldn’t find it hilarious watching of all these new Witches and Wizards running, completely terrified, at a solid brick wall?
