Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of Hogwarts founder Rowena Ravenclaw. Born in the year 982 she died sometime between the year 996 and 1000. She then became a The Ghost of Ravenclaw known as the Grey Lady.

Rowling hid the true identity of the Grey Lady right up until the final instalment of Harry Potter. Until then, Helena was relatively uninteresting and went unnoticed for the majority of the Harry Potter series. However, after Rowling lifted the veil on who she really was, interest in her character peaked.

But, Helena is still relatively unknown and not much of her backstory has been told. Here are 5 intriguing facts that you might know about Helena Ravenclaw that we hope you find interesting.

5: A Slytherin had a hand in her death

All of the houses have a ghost. Nearly Headless Nick is the Ghost of Gryffindor, The Fat Friar is the Ghost of Hufflepuff, the Grey Lady, a.k.a Helena Ravenclaw, is the Ghost of Ravenclaw and The Bloody Baron is the Ghost of Slytherin.

What you might not be aware of is the Bloody Baron is the one who killed Helena Ravenclaw. Her mother, who was dying at the time, desperately wanted to Helena. So she sent the Bloody Baron to find her and bring her back. When the Baron found Helena, she refused to return and in his anger killed her. The Baron later took his own life, overwhelmed with so much guilt.

4: Even after her death she attend class

She might have been dead and wandering around Hogwarts as a ghost but that didn’t stop Helena getting a Magical education. Her favorite class was Transfiguration and even after 1000 years since her death, she could still be seen regularly taking notes.

3: She wishes she had never crossed paths with Voldemort

Although she clearly had no idea what he would become to be and do. Helena wishes that she had never crossed paths with Voldemort, or back then Tom Riddle.

Helena had never revealed to anyone other than one person where she had hidden her mother’s Diadem. Riddle, who had always been a master of deception and deceit, convinced her to reveal its location. Upon learning what he had done to it she was horrified and regretted how she allowed him to defile it.

2: She was very envious of her mother, Rowena Ravenclaw

Rowena Ravenclaw, one of the founders of Hogwarts, was regarded so highly for her wisdom and power as a Witch that Helena, who was constantly overshadowed by her mother, became jealous and envious of her.

In her jealousy, Helena stole her mother’s famed Diadem, hoping that by stealing it she could become as wise as her mother. For the legend of the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw was that it granted the wearer great wisdom thanks to its many enchantments.

1: Why the “Grey Lady”?

It took some time before we learned who the Grey Lady really was. For years Helena was quiet and distant of her past. She would not talk about her past to anyone, or who her mother was and would even regularly avoid people who discussed Rowena Ravenclaw.

She preferred and used the name the Grey Lady but why she choose this name is still a bit unclear. One thought is that she still envied her mother despite how much time had gone by, the other thought is that she was still disgusted and in remorse for her what she did. Each idea leads to the same outcome however; Helena wanted no connection to her mother to be known.
