What is Star Wars Resistance, and when is it coming?

New reports suggest that Lucasfilm has plans for Star Wars: Resistance due to new filings, but what could it be, and when could we see it?

The Star Wars universe is ever-expanding these days, with three men attached to two future projects. We’re talking, of course, about Rian Johnson as well as the David Benioff and Dan Weiss team. Between them, they have at least five movies, since Johnson has a trilogy and Benioff-Weiss have signed up for more than one movie as well.

That’s why their series seem likely to be the home of Lucasfilm’s trademark filing for Star Wars Resistance. As io9 and Yakface have it, the applications cover pretty much everything under the sun when it comes to merchandising something, and both speculate that this could be for a show or something of the like.

But why couldn’t it be for either series of films? It doesn’t appear that they’re related to the anthology movies like Solo or Rogue One, based on reports. Indeed, the purpose of anthology films seems to be for one-off expansions within the known canon, hence the Obi-Wan Kenobi movie that may or may not exist.

In particular, Benioff-Weiss’ series might just be something like this. Although we know the Resistance as it exists in the sequel trilogy, that may not be the first time an organization has taken that name. (It is pretty generic when you think about it.) Game of Thrones, for instance, has done some huge medieval-style fights in its day. While that doesn’t directly translate to the scale of Star Wars‘ signature space battles, a Resistance-themed movie could do some on the ground work as well, similar to Rogue One‘s climactic sequence on Jedha.

Hey, it could maybe even show Captain Phasma off better than the movies have so far! She’d make an ideal antagonist if Resistance acts as a companion to the current trilogy of films.

Granted, Yakface and io9’s argument also makes sense considering how close we are to Disney’s streaming service. In fact, io9 even explicitly mentions it. However, it seems a bit early to give the game away in that respect — or at all.

Perhaps Lucasfilm is just trying to lock up any variations on the Star Wars name in trademarks, which would explain how extensive it is as well.
