Relax, Grey’s Anatomy fans, Bailey’s (probably) not going anywhere
By Buckie Wells
Ahead of Grey’s Anatomy’s next episode, “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper,” Chandra Wilson elaborates on the real purpose of the Miranda Bailey-centric episode.
Since learning that her husband wanted to switch careers, Bailey’s been having a hard time. Just recently, she saved the hospital from a really expensive bitcoin hack and gave a really difficult speech to her son about police safety.
The promo for the new episode “(Don’t Fear) the Reaper” led fans to believe that Bailey’s life was in danger. But according to star Chandra Wilson, that’s not really the episode’s intention.
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Wilson explained:
"What we really wanted to talk about in this episode, especially for women, is heart disease, how it manifests, how much of a killer of women it is, and how to be taken seriously when you walk into an emergency room situation so that you can be properly diagnosed and properly treated."
Inspired by the episode writer Elisabeth R. Finch, the goal of the episode is to start a conversation. This week, it looks like Grey’s will shed light on topical issues such as preventative care and proper treatment. Though the show has never been afraid to kill off a lead character, season 14 has been noticeably lighter. More importantly, it spends each hour very wisely. From tackling domestic abuse and introducing a trans doctor, showrunner Krista Vernoff’s return this season can assuredly be considered as one of Grey’s Anatomy’s best.
Over at TVLine, Wilson further highlighted the inadequate treatment that women can face when they go to the hospital:
"That’s why it’s always so important to have someone with you when you walk into an ER. Sometimes, when you’re in pain, it can be difficult to articulate that without having someone with you to corroborate what’s happening."
So, true to the character of Bailey, it sounds like she’ll be teaching us a lesson. We shouldn’t worry about whether she lives or not, but let’s hope she makes up with Ben soon.
