Saturday Night Live recap and review: Will Ferrell with musical guest Chris Stapleton

This week, Saturday Night Live gave us some great Will Ferrell goodies, including starting us off with an important message from George W. Bush.

Maybe Saturday Night Live should bring back all their former cast members to host. Why? Because Will Ferrell’s episode was one of the best in recent episodes.

It was just a fun time where he was in everything (after all, a lot of recent hosts have been cut out of some things).

From old characters to completely crazy sketches, the entire show was funny and had us laughing.

Cold Open

George Bush was here to let us know that we shouldn’t forgive his time as president. Why? Because he wasn’t great. And we shouldn’t want to have someone like him back in office. His way of showing us was to continually point out all the bad things he did.

He also made sure to point out that he does oil paintings now.

Monologue

Will Ferrell ran into a pole and then his entire monologue was a bit loopy. In a real Saturday Night Live “is that supposed to happen moment”, Ferrell comes on stage with blood on his head. We learn then that it is part of the bit and he is bleeding and trying to sing.

He ends up sitting in the audience to try and get his energy up and when it doesn’t work, he just starts the show.

Fighter Pilots

Pilots have their call signs, and they’re usually very serious. Clown Penis uses his for a very specific reason. That reason? He wants the people he’s about to shoot down to have the fear of him that they’d have if they saw his namesake.

And that’s pretty much it. The entire bit was his call sign, really, and he somehow ended up in space at one point? Not sure why but it is fine because he is fearsome.

The House

Honestly, one of my favorite bits is back. This Big Brother situation where these bros just want to be nice to each other is so simple yet so fun. The original came out during Chris Pine’s episode last year and it is fun, silly, and just generally nice to see.

On this episode, their movie night has a bit of a fork in the road but all is resolved, that is until one of the housemates learns that he has a son and a dog that have to come and live in the house.

Commercial Shoot

Okay the best way to describe this sketch is to watch what it is based on. Basically, these two customers cannot get their lines right and continue to mess up a commercial taping. It is simple, fun, and just a married couple trying to film something for their favorite restaurant.

Flight Attendants

Garreth knows the truth about death and he isn’t afraid to share about it. But the problem is that he is doing so while rapping about the inflight plan for a flight. It is pretty insane and also really relatable.

Mainly because Garreth just doesn’t care anymore. Honestly it is a fun sketch, just someone beat-boxing while these flight attendants try and get the flight up and going, and then Garreth will say whatever he wants.

Next for Men

Need that extra strength deodorant? Well, Next for Men has you covered. So when you’re called out for your sexual assault allegations, you won’t sweat through your shirt! From an actor, to a businessman, to the voice over, every man is covered.

Even comedians need it ! Honestly, it’s at least kind of funny, but a weird take on all the idea that it is a “witch hunt” out there for men right now but not poking fun at everything that’s happening.

Chris Stapleton

Okay so in all honesty, it is fine. I’m not a big Chris Stapleton fan. His music is fun to listen to but not really something that you remember days later. In fact, writing this, I can’t even remember what the song he did sounded like.

The second song, with Sturgill Simpson (which I realized he was in the first song too) sounded like it belonged in the movies Crazy Heart or Hell or High Water. Basically it should be in a Jeff Bridges movie. Or maybe Jeff Bridges should be on stage with them. I don’t know, this music is fine. I just feel like I could only listen to it if I’m in a car driving down some country road.

Weekend Update

Jacob Silj is back and he can’t control his volume control still. In fact, he can’t control it to the point where he ends up going to the gym and falling in love with a male dancer there. The rest of Weekend Update was pretty normal but there was a new character who really stood out.

Bailey has her own YouTube channel where she reviews movies and she goes on a whole rant about not having feelings for Armie Hammer after Call Me By Your Name. It was relatable (at least to me) and I wish that was a real channel.

Reality Stars

The star of this sketch is the dog that barely moved while Will Ferrell held it. Honestly, I thought the dog was dead for like the first 2 minutes of the sketch. Two friends end up famous and they go back to visit their old friends and throw them into the drama of their reality TV show.

This is one of those sketches that is just silly and probably was just a small idea that they sketched out but was really funny in the end, especially because of their make up.

Dinner Discussion

Don’t bring up the Aziz Ansari op-ed piece around your friends. If you do, your wife might leave you. Basically a girl brings up the Aziz story and everyone freaks out, figuring out how everyone can cover the topic and share their opinion without someone hating them.

Honestly? What a sketch for GIFs. We’re going to have some great reactions out of this one.

Office Breakroom

This sketch makes me feel something because Will Ferrell just complains because everyone makes fun of him because he mistakes Crate and Barrel and Cracker Barrel. Why do I relate? Well, when don’t you feel stupid about something you said that was wrong?

That’s the whole sketch, and it is great and fun. Honestly, I’ve had that reaction in my mind before.

Chucky Lee Byrd

A man who keeps writing songs about teenage girls is getting a box set. Or at least he is until the hosts of the commercial hear the songs and realize what they’re about. But he’s Beck Bennett’s grandpa so he has to support his grandpa’s ’50s-style rock music. Even if he did write all the songs in the 1980s.

In a last minute sketch, it was fine. It did it’s job and that’s all we can ask.

This episode was honestly really good and made me happy for Saturday Night Live. It felt like the show we know and love once again!
