How to Get Away with Murder season 4: Why does Jorge Castillo want Laurel’s baby?

What is the point of Jorge Castillo taking custody of Laurel Castillo’s baby on How to Get Away with Murder, or is it not his endgame at all?

How to Get Away with Murder appears to be setting up a battle between father and daughter (with Annalise on the side of the daughter) for part of its second half of season 4. Although Jorge Castillo won the opening battle to take custody of Laurel’s baby away from her, we suspect that it was just a gambit for his larger plan.

After all, Laurel’s work for this entire season has been to take her father’s company down — and at this point, it wouldn’t surprise us if Jorge is revealed to have either known about it all along or suspected something was up as soon as he heard about the break-in at Caplan & Gold. After all, he arrives with papers in hand to take the baby away the same night that the child’s born and the break-in occurs. That speaks to some prior planning, doesn’t it?

Additionally, it’s quite clear that his plan is to discredit Laurel, thanks to the paperwork that clearly mentioned she’d tested positive for cocaine usage. Annalise did her best in the show’s return last week to fight that and get a new test, but she got nowhere. As much as her tears might have shown she was truly invested in the case, it also feeds into a narrative that Jorge can use: that he, and he alone, is capable enough and filled with the “right” emotions to care for his grandson.

Now, if I had more faith in How to Get Away with Murder, I’d say that that’s actually a pretty strong storyline to operate on. The issue is that I really don’t have faith in How to Get Away with Murder at this point. There’s a powerful discussion to be had here about the idea of emotion as something avoidable or negative when women express it, and although Viola Davis is a stellar actress, she doesn’t write the scripts.

But it’s possible that I could be surprised. This could all work out well. Keep an eye on How to Get Away with Murder, fans. It could make a turnaround yet.
