Avengers 4: What’s going on with Captain America?

Following the leak of Avengers 4 set photos, fans have been filling the Internet with theories about the film … and Captain America.

With filming for Avengers 4 just wrapped, leaks are becoming an inevitable part of the process. The most recent of these is a collection of set photos released on JustJared’s Twitter account (which CBR then picked up). The shots feature Captain America (Chris Evans), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) messing around in their battle gear.

And the gear they’re wearing has fans bombarding the Internet with speculations.

Instead of sporting their aged looks from the recently released trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, our heroes appear in these photos as they did in the earlier MCU installments.

Most notable is Captain America’s appearance. Not only is he donning his suit from the first movie, but his face is clean-shaven. This is a huge jump from the Infinity War trailer, which depicts him with a macho beard and his newer uniform.

Since the pictures hit Twitter, the Internet has exploded with fan theories explaining the stars’ appearances. Many believe that they were filming a flashback scene. Considering Avengers: Infinity War emphasizes the heroes’ previous failures to function as a team, it makes sense that the new films would revisit the past.

A huge number of fans are also suggesting time travel as a possibility. The inclusion of Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) strengthens this theory, especially since Doctor Strange ended with the Time Stone in his possession.

There’s also the matter of the devices the cast are wearing on their hands, which may serve as aids in time hopping. Such technology isn’t beyond the scope of the MCU, and the equipment may even relate back to the Infinity Stones.

Whatever the reasoning behind the new photos, one thing is for certain. The two new Avengers films look to be well worth all the excitement.

Avengers 4 hits theaters May 3, 2019. Though this seems like quite the wait, there will be plenty of releases to keep Mavel fans occupied in the interim.
