Pink continues national anthem female singer tradition at Super Bowl LII
At Super Bowl LII, Pink will sing the National Anthem. Her performance continues the tradition of female singers in this role.
As Minneapolis and the NFL prepare for Super Bowl LII, announcements about the big game and the festivities surrounding the event are made. Just announced, Pink will be the Super Bowl LII national anthem singer. The accomplished singer/songwriter joins a long list of female singers who have performed this song at the Super Bowl. It is her first time performing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.
At the past 10 Super Bowls, all but one of the national anthem singers have been women. Only Super Bowl LI National Anthem singer was a man (sung by Luke Bryan). While the majority of national anthem singers have been women, the singers’ styles are quite diverse.
Looking at the past 10 Super Bowls, the female singers have come from various genres. Pop, country and even classical have been represented. The biggest connection between the past 10 singers has been American Idol. From Kelly Clarkson to Carrie Underwood, four of the last 10 singers had their start on the venerable reality singing competition.
Choosing Pink as this year’s national anthem singer is a curious decision. Her recent performances at awards shows have been quite acrobatic and theatrical. While some people consider the national anthem a highly musically difficult song, the performance itself is usually more subdued. How she will handle the often scrutinized performance will be interesting.
Given the current social and political climate, more female representation at the final football game of the season is important. While Justin Timberlake headlines the half-time show, females are finding their voice in the National Football League celebration. From the NFL Play 60 Ambassador to NFL Women summits, the gridiron isn’t just a man’s field. Women’s voices need and will be heard in and around the final game of the season.
As for the national anthem performance itself, fans will speculate on the performance up to game time. From the overall duration of the song to the outfit worn, the moment is more than just a performance. The song, and its singer, hold the attention of billions of fans worldwide.
Even with all the hype, the song is difficult to sing. Hopefully, the performance is live and the notes are hit. Even more importantly, let’s hope that Pink doesn’t forget the lyrics.
