Ally Sheedy calls out James Franco after his Golden Globes win
By Robin Lempel
What happened between Ally Sheedy and James Franco? The Breakfast Club actress accused The Disaster Artist star of something when he won the Golden Globe.
Ally Sheedy has something to say about James Franco. As women came out in full-force to promote Time’s Up and talk about a changing tide when it comes to sexism in Hollywood and beyond, the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy winner was facing his own #MeToo moment.
In three tweets, which she quickly deleted, Sheedy called out Franco and nominee Christian Slater during the 2018 Golden Globes. She was shocked Franco was even there, let alone the fact that he won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for The Disaster Artist. Franco, by the way, was also criticized for totally blocking his subject Tommy Wiseau from the mic when he gave his acceptance speech.
“Why is a man hosting? Why is James Franco allowed in? Said too much. Nite love ya #goldenglobes,” the Breakfast Club actress wrote in the first tweet.
She then included Franco and Slater in a #MeToo tweet. “Ok wait. Bye. Christian Slater and James Franco at a table on @goldenglobes #MeToo,” Sheedy added.
Then when Franco won the Golden Globe, she insinuated that he was the reason she left the entertainment industry. “James Franco just won. Please never ever ask me why I left the film/tv business,” Sheedy wrote.
Quickly, people started to wonder what went on between Sheedy and Franco. Was she talking about a personal experience she had with Franco? As Vanity Fair notes, Franco directed Sheedy during his off-Broadway directorial debut in The Long Shrift in 2014. Did something happen back then? Or was she alluding to Franco’s previous scandals? While Sheedy didn’t provide more details, she was clearly accusing Franco of something.
And this isn’t the first time Franco’s been called out. Many pointed back to the time Franco messaged a 17-year-old on Instagram and tried to get them a hotel room back in 2014. At the time, Franco called it “bad judgment.”
But after Franco won the Golden Globe, others on Twitter came out to call out the actor’s bad behavior and blast him for wearing black and a Time’s Up pin.
While it’s not clear what Franco’s being accused of, he wasn’t the only one to raise eyebrows at the Golden Globes. Many fans watching found it ironic that the awards show was celebrating women’s empowerment and an end to sexual misconduct while still promoting actors with troublesome pasts. Gary Oldman, for example, won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama despite Oldman’s then-wife claiming he assaulted her with a telephone in front of their children in 2001, which Oldman denies. Kirk Douglas received a standing ovation despite accusations that he raped Natalie Wood. And Slater was nominated for Best Supporting Actor — Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
