Sabrina has arrived at Netflix: Kiernan Shipka finally gets her own series

Although Kiernan Shipka has played some pretty high-profile roles, she has what appears to be two full seasons as Sabrina the Teenage Witch for Netflix.

Depending on your age, you might recognize Kiernan Shipka in one of three roles: the voice of Jinora in The Legend of Korra, Bette Davis’ daughter B.D. in Feud: Bette and Joan or, perhaps most apparent, Sally Draper of Mad Men fame. But none of those roles are necessarily the main character — but now, it appears Shipka has two seasons to own a series. According to TheWrap, she’s going to play Sabrina the Teenage Witch for Netflix.

On the whole, this is a pretty great piece of casting. Shipka’s actually only 18, according to her IMDb, so, at least for now, she’s actually a teenager. However, remember how long Mad Men ran? She was on the show for the entire run — and it’s entirely possible she’ll be on a pretty long run here as well. But moreover, she’s quite the strong actress, with ensemble awards from Mad Men under her belt as well as some smaller individual wins.

Additionally, the cast looks like it’ll take a leaf out of Riverdale‘s book and cast all kinds of actors to play all kinds of characters. For instance, CBR reports that roles like antagonist Madame Satan, Sabrina’s aunts Zelda and Hilda or Sabrina’s love interest are open to “all ethnicities.” In fact, one character, Ambrose, is expected to be played by an East Indian or African-American actor … and he’s also described as being pansexual. That’s a step forward from the issues some fans have had with Riverdale about Jughead’s comics-canon asexuality — and even Cole Sprouse has spoken out about it.

Oh, and Hilda and Zelda apparently flat-out run a funeral home, per those character descriptions. That’s appropriately spooky. This writer will admit she’s been excited anyway for this series … but hey, it’s all the more real now.
