Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Disney’s very confident in its movie
New reports suggest Disney is angling for more than just positive reviews when it comes to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but is it too much?
Look, I’ve cracked jokes about how Star Wars: The Last Jedi is going to make all the money. In fact, Box Office Pro suggests that a $200+ million opening is not out of the question. But pretty much everyone knew that that this movie would make oodles of money.
What was less certain, at least until recently, was whether or not critics would like the movie. After all, genre film doesn’t always do quite so well.
Then comes this report from Star Wars News Net, citing AwardsCircuit’s owner:
That is a long, long list of categories for awards, including Oscars as the tweet itself states. Now, SWNN notes that the big thing here is that Mark Hamill is in the Lead Actor category, which we agree is a pretty big sign. However, the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm are shopping this movie at all suggest that they know they have something very, very good on their hands.
Of course, this could have been spurred, at least in part, by the fact that Wonder Woman is also getting an awards campaign of its own in a lot of the same categories, at least in the sense that it’s becoming more and more normalized for big blockbusters to publicize that they’re trying for awards, too.
But, as sites like The Hollywood Reporter have already noted, those who went to this weekend’s premiere have mostly reacted with lots of capital letters and exclamation points of joy — and that includes reporters and critics, too.
