Saturday Night Live season 43 episode 8 review: James Franco

James Franco is back to host Saturday Night Live this week and we love a good Christmas episode of SNL. Especially with loss of blood and Scrooge.

Saturday Night Live is getting into the holiday spirit with James Franco this week. With musical guest Sza, it was quite the episode. Filled with sketches about the holiday, knocks at the president, and James Franco’s weird humor, it was actually pretty great!

And it helps that Steve Martin, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Dave Franco all decided to stop by and help out their friend.

Cold Open

Sometimes little kids know too much and that is very clear this Christmas. Every kid asks about something in the news until a little girl at the end needs some cheering up. So Kate McKinnon sits her down and tells her that right now, everything seems scary but it will be okay in the end.

We don’t know whether it will be or not but at least that little girl will always have that moment where she stood on Saturday Night Live and said “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”

Monologue

They don’t write monologues for you when you’ve hosted four times. Or at least they don’t if you’re James Franco. Instead, they just open it up for audience questions and that means that Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill get really excited about Sza.

James is hosting and his friends don’t care, they just want to see their favorite musician and then Steve Martin is there for whatever reason and everyone is happy about it all.

Sexual Harassment Charlie

Poor Charlie got fired and he thinks it is for sexual harassment. Doug, who is seemingly innocent, is fired for sexual harassment as well but Charlie does a little bit of stuff that isn’t exactly okay. So the two apologize to the holiday party.

Too bad Charlie had to go because he was wanted for kidnapping and using the company computer for porn. He was a good guy.

Gift Wrap

Sometimes you like your gifts with a little bit of blood. Or more like there is one dedicated Bloomingdale’s employee who wants to make sure all the gifts are perfect and his blood isn’t going to stop him from wrapping everything.

Basically an employee gets a papercut but he’s on blood thinners so he just bleeds everywhere and then continues to cut off his fingers and foot to bleed everywhere, even into his own mouth before spitting it out onto Leslie Jones.

Scrudge

Don’t invite Scrudge to a party because even if an angel comes to him and tells him to think about the great part of the holiday season, he’ll still mess with everyone. Scrudge is Kyle Mooney’s roommate and he feels bad for him.

So obviously he comes and is a terrible guest and just continues to be a terrible guest because he’s still Scrudge so why would we think it is anything different?

Spelling Bee

Someone needs to check on the moderator. His step father really did a number on him growing up and now this moderator is taking it out on the children. Which is obviously a bad idea. Because, you know, they’re children and they definitely don’t need to know about the fact that he likes to be peed on in the bedroom.

But that’s okay because the announcer can’t spell anyway and the whole this is a bit of a mess but in a great way.

Sza

If you haven’t heard of Sza, get ready to be obsessed. Her music is unique, fun, and a great departure from anything I’ve really heard before. Her performances on Saturday Night Live were just fun and that’s something I always love in a musical guest.

Both songs were beautiful and sensual. Sza is definitely one artist I’m going to be looking up after seeing her performance on Saturday Night Live.

Weekend Update

CathyAnne is back. And she had a lot to say. Well, basically all of Weekend Update is bashing Trump and everything that happened this week because that’s all anyone does anymore. Can you blame them? But what was interesting was the Michael Che as a white, liberal woman.

Because it doesn’t really help us not liking Michael Che that much. Because it’s still him complaining and talking about women in a way that I, personally, wish he would not do. But whatever the case may be, it was a pretty clever part of Weekend Update that could be an interesting new addition to the show.

Za

Honestly, I have no idea. I guess a lawyer wanted to figure out what “za” versus “suh” was and they were going to pin a murder on a guy. But he actually did it? Basically it makes no sense and everyone is laughing during it. Because why does a lawyer need to show proof if the suspect can’t figure out “za” vs “suh”?

Again, I honestly cannot tell you what is going on in this sketch but it is funny.

Christmas Charity

Christmas is the time of giving. But sometimes, you give and you give and it is all just to James Franco. In a wonderful sketch about the holiday season, we see a woman wanting to help a homeless man. Too bad that homeless man is James Franco.

So after she gives him money and clothes, she goes to shave his face before he admits he can’t because it’s for a role.

Family Reunion

The Franco family is having a reunion but lucky their hot cousin is there to help make James make more Planet of the Apes movies. She continually asks if he’s okay and in the end when James decides to just go inside, Dave Franco appears and tells her it is fine.

Honestly, it was a pretty weird but great episode overall. And lucky for us, we still have one more one before the holiday season!
