Why the Silence Breakers deserved the Person of the Year award

The Silence Breakers take the spot of TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year and it is about time. We’re talking about the strength these women had and why they deserve this win.

TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year is an important win for anyone out there but this year, it is quite special. The Silence Breakers, those behind the #MeToo movement and the Women’s March, were named Person of the Year.

In a year of upheaval and pure insanity, these women made sure our voices were heard and continued to share their stories with the world. They empowered women all over the United States (and other countries around the world) to come out about incidents of sexual assault and  harassment that has happened to them throughout the years.

These women helped to organize the Women’s March to show the president that we will not go quietly into whatever it is he brings upon us. They stood up for what they believed in and often were shot down or ridiculed along the way.

But they continued to defend their ideals and make sure that the world knew what was important. So of course these amazing people are collectively the “Person” of the Year. The announcement came this morning when TIME Magazine editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal revealed the cover as well as the final choice for Person of the Year.

The shortlist included Colin Kaepernick, Patty Jenkins, the Silence Breakers and then other people (those three were the ones most of us were rooting for anyway). Luckily, those behind the #MeToo movement took on the crown and people everywhere could breathe a sigh of relief. At least it was one of our top three and wasn’t Donald Trump again.
