I think we all stayed up to watch BB-8 punch it and Rey cut through that rock

Last night, ABC aired a new Star Wars: The Last Jedi TV spot during the “Magical Holiday Celebration,” but it didn’t show us a lot of new stuff really.

Look, let’s be crystal here: rocks are rocks are rocks are rocks. They’ve built a solid reputation for being really difficult things to get through/crumble/slice in half. And yet, last night’s new Star Wars: The Last Jedi TV spot completely soiled how formidable Ahch-To’s sedimentary rock really is. Seriously, let’s rename it ‘Rey, paper, sabers’ now. (Too much? Just lean into it.) Saber beats rock, rock beats porg…

Anyway, if you stayed up last night, the new TV spot didn’t give us a lot of new stuff, but it did extend this scene right at the end:

Yeah, she’s going to get all the way through that thing.

But the trailer begins with her switching out her staff for the lightsaber in a way that confirms my long-held theory that Rey’s resolve is stronger than just a bag of conflicted emotions. Regardless of who her parents are or what she learns in this movie, she’s going to wield that lightsaber and learn how to use it one way or another. And she’s going to use it for good. However the movie’s trying to sway you, it appears that Daisy Ridley understands the responsibility she carries for Rey’s character. Like Carrie Fisher, she is the custodian of the character. A character that wouldn’t serve “women in cinema” well if she went to the Dark Side.

So, I just wanted to get that out of the way again. Again, again.

The Last Jedi‘s certainly doing its due diligence to get people out to the theaters, which reportedly, won’t be that hard. It’s headed toward a $200 million opening, which would make it the best opening of the year when it opens on Dec. 15.
