Just kidding, Netflix is going to be the home of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Netflix knows how much fans like to binge Riverdale, and now it’s cutting out the middleman in the form of The CW for The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
In the TV realm, a lot has been made about how big Riverdale got not during its first season, but in between its first and the currently-airing second. One of Culturess’ own writers detailed her experience coming in late to the show. Even The Hollywood Reporter makes note of it after reporting that rather than going to The CW, as initially reported, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina — or something else, as THR calls it “untitled” — will now become a Netflix Original.
While THR focuses on the popularity of Riverdale as a strong incentive for Netflix to take the show all by itself, it also works to capture an audience not always well-served by Netflix’s current library: millennials and younger, primarily women, and a rabid fanbase.
After Netflix saw how people responded to Stranger Things‘ second season by making even more memes than the first, and presumably saw how much people talk about Riverdale weekly, why not shoot for the next big thing?
In fact, Netflix took a page from Archie Comics’ Twitter account book when it tweeted out this announcement:
Now, as any Riverdale fan knows, outbrooding Jughead Jones is an extremely tall order, but, having read the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comic … yeah, she’s definitely up to it. As we’ve seen, Netflix is also willing to spend plenty of money on shows — which could mean a noticeable bump up in quality for the show.
When you’re talking a supernatural show, having extra money for effects (or casting, but probably mostly effects, even if they don’t make Salem physically talk) usually isn’t a bad thing.

Perhaps the best news of all? Two seasons of Sabrina are happening at minimum — THR reports it’s a “straight-to-series” order. There’s no airdate yet, but the original development was to have this ready for 2018. Keep an eye on this one going forward.
