The first hijab-wearing Barbie has made its official debut

Ibtihaj Muhammad is already a ground-breaker as the first hijab-wearing American Olympian and medal winner. Now she’s breaking records with her own Barbie.
Mattel is officially coming out with its first hijab-wearing Barbie! The history-making doll will be based on an equally inspirational woman: Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad.
Muhammad is a sabre fencer and was the first American Olympic athlete to compete in an event while wearing a hijab when she participated in the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She wound up winning the bronze medal and became the first female Muslim-American athlete to win a medal at the Olympics.
Now Mattel has partnered with Muhammad as a part of their “Shero” line, which celebrates boundary-breaking women. Other “Sheroes” include Ashley Graham, Zendaya, Kristen Chenoweth, Gabby Douglas, Emmy Rossum, Trisha Yearwood, Misty Copeland, and Ava DuVernay.
According to The Wrap, Muhammad’s Barbie made its debut at Glamour’s Women of the Year Live Summit earlier today. It will be available to the public, though, in the fall of 2018.
For Muhammad, it was not only important for the doll to have her hijab, but also for it to share her likeness and have her body type. The doll looks just like Muhammad, and has her athletic, toned legs and trademark winged eyeliner. It also includes a fencing uniform with her name on it, a fencing mask, and a sabre.
Speaking to People, Muhammad said she was excited about working with Mattel because it works hard to promote strong women and inspire future generations. She found being included “very humbling.”
“I think it’s revolutionary for Barbie to take a stand in this moment that we’re in – and I would say, as a country, to have a doll wear a hijab and be the first of its kind,” Muhammad told People.
"There has never been a Barbie doll to wear a hijab before. I’m really excited to have this moment happen in my life and also for all these little girls now who can shop for [a] Barbie doll that may look [like] them, may wear a hijab like they do, or like their mom does, or like a friend does. But also have kids who aren’t Muslim, who don’t wear a hijab, to also have the opportunity to play with a doll that wears a hijab."
This ground-breaking Barbie is such a win for increased representation and inclusivity. Mattel is working hard to have dolls that represent different races, religions, body types, and more. Now girls who wear a hijab can have a Barbie that looks like them too. And girls that don’t get to see what a Barbie in a hijab looks like, which is more important now than ever. Plus, they get to learn about fencing!

As Muhammad notes to People, “It’s cool to have Muslim girls in the conversation, to have African Americans as fencers is also really cool. I feel like we’re just shattering all the little glass ceilings.”
