Saturday Night Live season 43 episode 4 review: Larry David

Larry David is back on Saturday Night Live with musical guest Miley Cyrus. And we have your recap of every sketch of the night!

Was this episode of Saturday Night Live good? Not really. It was a mix of great moments and then sketches that had us questioning what in the world was going on. But Larry David still gave us some great little moments to talk about tomorrow.

So we’re going through every sketch to talk about what we liked and what we really didn’t like.

Cold Open

Well, this was a bit of a mess. Paul Manafort and Donald Trump are talking. Donald points out that Harvey Weinstein could have gotten away with everything if he just became president and Melania is on her way to Asia with an inflatable Trump doll.

While it was funny in theory, there were a bit of mishaps that happened. There’s a shower scene later in the sketch where Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions clean up Trump and Manafort. The cast left the scene too early, so there was dead air for a second until they came back.

Other than that it was just fine. Not really special but not terrible either.

Monologue

I think they just let Larry David stand on stage and say what he wanted. So if you like yelling and pretty much everything that Larry is about, then you’re fine. Otherwise, it was a rambling bit of a mess that I didn’t find particularly funny (and normally I love Larry David).

It didn’t really help when he started to talk about sexual assault. Granted, he was explaining why he didn’t like all the news coming out, primarily because a lot of the abusers have been Jewish. His joke centered around the fact that he didn’t like that the abusers were Jewish. The problem? Well, the problem is the abuse, not who’s doing it. And then he started talking about his obsession with women.

It got dark when he said he would still be checking out women in concentration camps.

 The Price is Right

MILEY CYRUS SAID A HEMSWORTH JOKE. Honestly, celebrity Price is Right is fine and it’s kind of funny but the only part that really is of interest is how Miley Cyrus makes jokes about Liam and Chris Hemsworth.

Basically, there are teams playing on The Price is Right. Larry David is Bernie Sanders and while that is pretty funny; what’s funnier is Miley Cyrus playing a contestant whose celebrity is Chris Hemsworth. She asks if he has a brother and later on, Liam comes out to join the party.

White House Press Conference

Honesty wish I could explain this one. Basically Sarah Huckabee Sanders sings a Demi Lovato song because she doesn’t want to do her job? And she fake explains what taxes are. The point of it? Your guess is as good as mine but at least Aidy Bryant as Sanders came back in full force.

Advertising Awards

Times they are a-changing. Basically, a man is getting honored for his work throughout the years but then he realizes that his ads don’t exactly hold up. It’s a weirdly tasteful way to show where we were versus where we are now.

Was that the intention? Maybe not but the sketch ended up being pretty awesome.

Baby Step

Larry David refuses to do this sketch. They keep cutting back to him and he keeps telling them to stop. Miley, Pete, Chris, and Kenan are all doing a new dance called the “baby step” while wearing diapers. Which Larry isn’t into at all.

So the sketch ends with everyone feeling weird about it since Larry was so against it all. That is, except for Pete and Kenan. They still want to be in it.

Miley Cyrus

If you’re like me, you’ve been a Miley fan for quite some time. So watching her perform “Bad Mood” made me so happy because she’s been through quite a lot of ups and downs throughout her career. But one thing that has always remained is her music. Without fail, her songs have been amazing and this performance was just that.

Are Miley’s slow songs some of the best in the world? Yes and “I Would Die For You” was beautiful. Just Miley in all white singing and it showed just how amazing her voice really is.

Weekend Update

Did Weekend Update tear apart Donald Trump for the entire first half? You bet it did. And it was great, but the real winner of Weekend Update? Angel the girlfriend from every boxing movie ever. But you better watch out or she’ll take the kids to her sister’s.

Sometimes characters come in and you know they’re going to be recurring but they’re not great. Angel is the opposite. She started and I instantly wanted her to come back every week. She’s funny, she is a fighter, and she wants to take the kids to her sister’s.

Fresh Takes

The kids in school (and their teacher) have hot takes. Larry David is their professor but these kids are talking about their classmates and it honestly gets weird. Mr. B starts talking about kids sleeping together and everyone gets uncomfortable with it.

Maybe too soon? Actually, it is definitely too soon with everything going on in the world. Which isn’t surprising for Saturday Night Live, but still.

New Wife

So a lawyer’s new life is queen of the gay community. Or at least, that’s what her whole deal is. Clearly making fun of Erika Jayne, the funniest part of the sketch was listening to Larry David saying “Hunty”. It gets better when Larry David continually breaks while wearing the black wig.

It was good before but watching Larry try his hardest to get through the end of the sketch without keeping a straight face made it.

Cousin CJ

CJ is their alcoholic cousin who only has one job: watch the fish. With terrible acting and a sitcom feel, CJ kills the fish then kills Mario who questions him. It’s okay though, he realizes he has a problem then.

So was this episode good? I feel like the shrugging emoji fits in best. Because who really knows what’s going on.
