This Is Us season 2: What to expect from the Pearsons

This Is Us season 2 is off to an emotional start. The show continues to focus on family issues that are typically kept behind closed doors.

The most wonderful part of This Is Us is how the characters fearlessly and relentlessly tackle real, everyday issues. We are encouraged as viewers to believe that there is hope in addressing and sharing our struggles with others. The writers don’t fluff up any plot line with perfect families or fairytale romances. The problems the Pearsons face are hard to watch. We hurt with them, but we can also relate. This Is Us is successful because it makes the audience feel the feels. Season 2 is sticking to its guns and keeping this refreshing theme alive.

Kate loses the weight

Kate Pearson’s biggest storyline last season was her weight. She is like the millions of people in this country struggling with obesity and the health complications, social stigmas, and mental illness that can come with it. Kate is played by Chrissy Metz, who recently shared during an interview that she’s contractually obligated to lose weight this season. There is no number she’s required to reach, but we will get to watch her transformation and witness the hard work and sacrifice it takes to get healthy.

Addiction comes in all shapes and sizes.

Alcoholism was officially added to the list of This Is Us gold during “A Father’s Advice.”
Jack stands in the doorway of Miguel’s house at the end of the season premiere and finally admits he has a huge drinking problem. Jack badly wants help but he feels alcohol has the better of him.  Bless this show for shining a light on alcoholism through a good dad, husband, and overall lovable character. It’s about time we talk about how addiction can affect any demographic, and it’s also time we treat it like what it is: a disease.
