The best and worst of the 2017 Emmys Red Carpet

Tonight might be all about the best and worst of TV, but all eyes are going to be on Emmys Red Carpet. Here is the best and worst of the night.

As the celebs came and went on the Emmys Red Carpet, we were all taking note of what everyone was wearing — sometimes it’s too hard not to notice. While every one of these actors is talented in the ways of making excellent TV, some of them just couldn’t get it right when it came to dressing for the big night. I guess not everyone is blessed with otherworldly beauty and grace like tonight’s honorable mention, Issa Rae.

Alas … nobody can be flawless and interminably gorgeous all the time, and there are bound to be mistakes along the way, as evidenced by the back half of this list. Although the good is so freaking beautiful, the bad is just as awful. These are the best and worst dressed of the 2017 Emmys Red Carpet.

Best

Elizabeth Moss

Elizabeth Moss is a cotton candy dream in this vintage-inspired A-line dress. The fit is perfect, but that shade of pale pink is everything.

Thandie Newton

It seems like Thandie Newton got the ‘pale pink” memo, as well. Her dress, as simple as it is, is about as close to princess you can get without tipping over into costumey. She looks like she was made in a lab.

Sofia Vergara

Sofia Vergara is never afraid to accentuate her shape and curves, and this mermaid-cut dress hugs her in all the right place. The bangs are questionable, but who’s even looking at her hair, anyway?

Yara Shahidi

This dress is not only exquisitely fitted and designed, but it’s also sexy in a really age-appropriate way. This gown is proof that you don’t have to let your groceries hang all the way out to be beautiful.

Tituss Burgess

As the only male on the list, Tituss Burgess is slaying the Red Carpet in that gold jacket. Never one to shrink into the background, this jacket is reliable attention-getter. On a less confident man, it could have been overwhelming and aggressive, but it works every single way.

Millie Bobby Brown

Speaking of age-appropriate glam-wear, Brown looks perfect. She doesn’t look like she’s playing dress-up with her older sister’s clothes, nor does she look like she’s succumbing to her youth. Everything about this look — the dress, the minimal jewelry, the classic bun — screams poise and maturity. That’s no small feat for a 13-year-old girl.

Kate McKinnon

Kate McKinnon kept it simple in this two-tone, cut out number. She has a more slender build, so this column-dress is the most flattering she could find. She has such a bold and fun personality, she can pull off something as understated as this.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman always looks good. I swear she could put on a grocery sack and folks would still vote her “best dressed.” She has successfully pulled off red so many times, it might as well be her signature color. She can do no wrong.

Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon may be a woman of a certain age, but she knows how to work her assets in every sense of the word. This off the shoulder number makes her look like a statue and the subtle detailing at the bust give it a little texture. Well done, lady. Well done.

Gina Rodriguez

Everything about this is just fire, fire, fire. That sexy, low-cut neckline, the hot, sizzling color, and those smokey eyes. Yowza. Gina Rodriguez looks so hot I can barely look directly at her.

Worst

Rachel Bloom

Although there isn’t anything aggressively offensive about this dress, Rachel Bloom could have done better to find a dress with a more comforting fit. I get that beauty is pain, but a dress shouldn’t the person just looking at it. Those straps looked like they were going to slice her arms right off at the shoulders, and the bust was hanging on for dear life. Someone call a tailor.

Tessa Thompson

All this color blocking is working against the lovely Ms. Thompson. Part stained-glass window, part child’s kaleidoscope, there’s far too much going on for our eyes to decide where to land. It just makes you want to look away.

Tracee Ellis Ross

I don’t even care that this is Chanel Haute Couture. It’s terrible. It looks like Mrs. Claus collided with a seagull. Tracee Ellis-Ross is always so free-spirited and whimsical. This dress looks so matronly and dowdy, and I’m feeling personally victimized by those gnarly feathers.

Mandy Moore

I really hate to come for Mandy Moore this way, but why is this dress three tiers long? The top half is so lovely and well-fitted, but the bottom looks like a hodge-podge mess. Can you imagine how adorable this look would have been if she could have just done away with the bottom two layers?

Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz’ dress looks more like an art project than an evening gown, and frankly, it looks super itchy. She’s probably leaving a trail of debris all over the red carpet. A dress shouldn’t shed, nor should it double as a way to lead authorities to your whereabouts after a kidnapping.

Debra Messing

Is it just me or does Debra Messing’s dress look like wet latex? This dress looks like it was poured on her from over head, Carrie-style. The draping is ill-fitting and adds bulk to her frame, and the color is strange and off-putting. It’s not great.

Reese Witherspoon

Reece Witherspoon, traditionally has amazing taste, but this looks like a cast-off from working girl. I mean … is she really wearing velvet shoes? The color isn’t so terrible, but I’m pretty sure she could have done menswear better than this.

Laura Dern

She may have won her category tonight, but this monstrosity isn’t taking home any awards. It’s like the designer put in every single trend of the season, and this what came out. It’s got feathers, sparkles, cutouts, and a black and white scheme. It could have done without 3/4 of those things.

Priyanka Chopra

More feathers, folks. Although this might have been the detail of the night, Priyanka Chopra missed it. Of course, she was in good company, as a lot of stars tried (and failed) to rock the feathers. Besides, there is just so much of this look. She’s covered from head to toe. Are we sure it’s not a scuba suit?

Erin Lim

Erin Lim isn’t really an actress, but she is sure to get some attention for whatever this is. It’s so busy, I don’t even know where to start. What’s happening here? Can you even tell?
