Insecure season finale breakdown: Hella Perspective

We’ve arrived at the Insecure season finale, where old habits die hard, new things aren’t appreciated, career paths are decided and somebody’s pregnant.

The Insecure season finale is all about perspectives and points of view as characters experience the same 30 days and cross paths within those 30 days. “Hella Perspective” follows Issa, Lawrence and Molly through these 30 days separately and gives insight into their feelings on some of the events of the episode. Let’s break down all of the developments.

Old habits and jealousies die hard with Lawrence

After cursing Issa out and beginning a relationship with Aparna, Lawrence is shown to be seemingly hitting his stride in work and in life. He begins a successful collaboration on an app at work, at Aparna’s insistence (does this guy ever do anything without someone having to insist that he needs to work with other people?).

Lawrence even helps his team finish a marathon. But trouble brews when Lawrence notices that Aparna and Colin, another co-worker she slept with are still a bit too buddy buddy for his liking. After he confronts Aparna on the way to see a movie, she gets angry and leaves just as Issa calls. Lawrence is then shown going to Issa’s apartment.

“Best revenge is your paper–” Unfortunately, Molly’s not getting the right kind…

Molly  takes her work situation into her own hands and starts taking interviews with other firms. She continues to get close with Quentin (Pastor’s Body). At a restaurant with Quentin, Molly sees Lawrence, but brushes him off. Molly is also back in therapy, but Dro is still texting her.  During a late night work session, Molly and Quentin get hot and heavy. Molly admits to liking Quentin but, to quote Issa, is still feeling “meh” about him after they have sex.

Back at her job, Molly’s superiors confess to not wanting to lose her. To show their appreciation for her hard work they give her the firm’s rising star award. No, folks, Molly doesn’t get a raise or promotion, she gets a certificate. Molly’s last scene shows her just after having sex with an unknown person before she gets a call from Issa that seems like an emergency.

Issa moves out, but doesn’t quite move on…

Issa is dealing with the gentrification in Inglewood and prepares to move. Her issues at work also come to a head. In an effort to help the Latino students who were barred from We Got Y’all’s program because of Mr. Gaines, Issa and Freida hold weekend sessions at We Got Y’all’s headquarters. When Issa’s boss learns what Issa has done, she fears that the racially segregated sessions could open them up to a lawsuit. She decides it might be best if Issa is no longer on the field. Freida is promoted to the director of student outreach position that Issa wanted.

Issa decides to move in with her brother and has a yard sale to get rid of some of her things. Lawrence drops by the apartment the day of Issa’s last walkthrough. The two apologize for the things that went wrong in their relationship. Before Lawrence leaves for good, Issa pictures the life the two of them could have had.

In the last scene, Issa and Molly have a Moroccan staycation, complete with a Moroccan dinner, fancy wine and desserts! #EveryoneNeedsaMolly. Issa leaves and the final scene reveals that Molly has started seeing Dro again (sigh) and Issa has moved in with Daniel (even bigger sigh).

My Thoughts…

  • I’m happy Lawrence and Issa both took ownership of their parts in the demise of their relationship and I’m also 100 percent okay with them not getting back together. They both still have some issues to work through (Lawrence’s jealousy and Issa’s career come to mind) and are better apart. I don’t think Issa’s continued friendship (or whatever) with Daniel would lend itself well to a reconciliation, either. Had they gotten back together I could see this very quickly turning into a Carrie/Aiden situation (for all my SATC fans) where no matter how hard Issa tries, Lawrence continues to not trust her because of her mistake and her unwillingness to remove the man she cheated with from her life.
  • Issa’s work problems are completely her fault and I agree that she should have spoken up about Gaines much sooner. But I still feel some type of way about Freida getting the position. Freida didn’t actively do anything to fix the problem with Mr. Gaines either — and yes, this is partly because Issa shut her down. But it’s also implied that it was just as much Freida’s idea to hold weekend sessions at We Got Y’all. I could see a case being made for her being promoted if she had actively tried to fix the problem, but she basically just stood there and got a promotion.
  • I sincerely hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Quentin. He complements Molly well and motivates her. In typical Molly fashion, she didn’t give the guy who would have actually been good for her a chance and instead slid back into the known with Dro. I’m beginning to believe what Tiffany said in season 1 about Molly intentionally sabotaging her life .
  • Molly is still acting funny around Lawrence and I want to know why. We never saw what Lawrence actually said to Molly a few episodes back and I wonder if that has anything to do with why she’s so edgy around him.
  • Kelly and Tiffany are HORRIBLE  to Issa. I’m a firm believer in having friends who don’t kick you when you’re down and those two did that the whole episode.
  • Also, is anyone else still wondering when the bottom is going to fall out of Tiffany’s “perfect” marriage? Fingers crossed for season 3. Maybe her and Derek’s new baby will add some drama. (Yes, she’s pregnant.)
