Marvel’s The Defenders season 1 episode 7 recap and review: Fish in the Jailhouse

In the penultimate episode, the Defenders must figure out where the Hand has taken Danny, and what exactly he will open for them.

With just two episodes left, we’re looking at a lot of loose threads to wrap together. Here’s hoping it’s not too difficult!

Not-So-Short Summary

Some time ago, Stick and Elektra met up in regards to recruiting Matt to the Chaste. Death is too much a part of this war.

Jessica wakes up in handcuffs, Misty Knight in front of her, interrogating. Foggy has Matt. And Misty just wants answers while they just want to leave and save Danny. Luke’s still out.

Colleen and Claire get a nice heart-to-heart scene about how they’ve ended up where they are. Claire even tried to get away from all these super-powered people!

Jessica, Matt, and Luke get put into a room with Misty and the police captain and try to figure out how to get out of their situation without having to give away too much. Somehow, they get out of it. There are a lot of sidebars between characters that I don’t think would actually happen in real life, but that’s okay. It’s a show, we should really just relax.

A tremor gives them a way out. Now there’s an APB and they have to take the subway to get to Danny. But they come face-to-face with the three remaining members of the Hand.

We finally get to see Madame Gao in action. Colleen also shows up in the middle to help take on Bakuto. There’s a lot going on in this fight, and the Hand shoot open a gas pipe to get away before more damage can be done. That’s when Misty shows up and asks how long she needs to stall the cops.

Meanwhile, back with the Hand, none of the remaining members trust Elektra, except Gao really just wants her new beginning so she’s more on the fence.

Elektra takes Danny down to the bottom of that mystery hole from Daredevil. Behind this mystery door is the true power of the Hand, or so she says.

Danny is forced to punch his way through the mystery wall and finds himself with the bones of a dragon not unlike Shou-Lao, the one he punched through the heart to become the Iron Fist.

Badass Moment of the Episode

Luke closing the gas pipe shut with his hand.

Best One-Liner

“He’s the Iron Fist.”
“I’m not gonna pretend to know what that means!” Foggy rebuffs.

Foggy’s freakout about Matt’s two lives coming together makes a lot of sense. Opening every case they’ve ever done because of who he’s revealed to be would have such a huge impact on everything. But … he’s still Matt’s friend, and it’s a nice touch that the change of clothes he brings is the Daredevil suit.

The scene of Jessica, Luke, and Matt taking the subway is a nice way to slow down the episode. Plus, who would expect them to take something so public and normal?
