Kesha describes how her new album Rainbow saved her life
By Robin Lempel
Kesha’s back with a deeply personal, revealing new album. Now she’s gone on Good Morning America to talk about how Rainbow saved her life.
It’s been a long, hard road for Kesha. But if her upcoming new album Rainbow tells us anything, it’s that she’s come out the other side stronger and better. Now, Kesha has appeared on Good Morning America to describe just how much her first album in five years means to her.
Kesha got incredibly emotional on Wednesday morning when Robin Roberts asked her about her first single off Rainbow, the deeply revealing song “Praying.” “It’s so personal,” Kesha said as she teared up. “I’ve written every song on this album and they’re all so personal.”
“And this song, I think, is just really important because it talks about me personally, going through something very hard, lots of very hard things, making it through, not giving up, and finding empathy on the other side, which is incredibly hard sometimes,” Kesha added, referring to “Praying” specifically.
Kesha and her former producer Dr. Luke were, of course, embroiled in a bitter legal battle, where Kesha accused Dr. Luke of sexual, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. Dr. Luke, meanwhile, sued Kesha for defamation and breach of contract.
Throughout the case, Kesha was unable to make music. It was heartwrenching to watch her struggle to keep her career alive while facing her abuser.
But now Kesha is finally coming out with a new album, though Rainbow will be released by Kemosabe Records and Dr. Luke will still profit off of Kesha’s work.
Rainbow is still a deeply personal, empowering, and meaningful album for Kesha. As she said, she wrote all the songs, we get to hear her true voice, and she is addressing some very real and painful experiences she’s gone through from her battle with Dr. Luke to her struggle with depression.
“Well, I think this record, quite literally, saved my life,” Kesha said on GMA. “And I hope you guys like it, and I hope you can hear it, and I hope it helps people.”
She explained that to her, rainbows and bright colors represented hope—along with the LGBTQ community—and now her whole house, body, and life is covered in rainbows.
Kesha went on to talk about how special it was to work with her family on an album that’s so important to her. She worked with her mom for a lot of her album, her brother filmed with her, and she worked with Dolly Parton, who she said she considers family now.
Kesha then went on to perform her powerful lead single “Praying.”
