The BBC has found its new vehicle for Mary Berry — and it sounds fantastic

Mary Berry will appear on a new TV show to let people who think they can cook down gently when they disappoint her, and we’re here for it.

The Great British Baking Show has a lot of excellent parts in its current form, but it’s hard to deny that Mary Berry doesn’t contribute a particular dose of legitimacy. It helps that the royal family has awarded her a CBE “for services to culinary arts”. In other words, she probably knows more about cooking than the rest of us have forgotten, and it’s always fun to hear how exactly she decides to subtly judge things that do not pass muster.

On the currently-airing-here-in-the-United States season of The Great British Baking Show, “informal” has been her word of choice when things don’t look quite as she expects they should. She also hasn’t lost her taste for a bit of alcohol where warranted, which is great.

But of course, she won’t be on The Great British Baking Show anymore, because the show has moved to a completely different channel in the U.K., and it only managed to snag Paul Hollywood, who is much more direct in his criticisms and does not enjoy hooch in baked goods quite as much as she does.

So, what’s the BBC to do when it has a TV personality (with a CBE, mind you) without a show? Put her on another show, of course. According to People, that show has the name of Britain’s Best Cook, which means that she has more opportunities to come up with more polite ways to tell you you have disappointed her deeply.

Unfortunately, she’ll have to do it this time without Mel Perkins and Sue Giedroyc, who also didn’t leave the BBC during last year’s Great British Bake Off hullabaloo.

Unfortunately, People doesn’t say if PBS has decided whether or not to get its hands on Britain’s Best Cook. The answer may very well be “no,” but PBS hasn’t exactly been clear on how many seasons of British Baking it has in the tank previously, either, so it’s possible that this competitive cooking show could come over for Americans to watch. Of course, there are other options for where this show could go — BBC America might have its eyes on this show as well, though that’s pure speculation.

We all know she was the big draw for The Great American Baking Show, too. If ABC can bet on Mary Berry, CBE, then PBS might just have to do so again as well.
