Game of Thrones season 7, episode 2: Twitter reaction

Social media was buzzing during and after Game of Thrones season 7 episode 2 on Sunday night. Here’s what people had to say about “Stormborn.”

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

A lot went down on Game of Thrones Sunday night. The season’s second episode was all about different characters and factions connecting or making moves that would allow them to connect with other characters and factions. We got to see Melisandre finally meet Daenerys. We got to see four badass ladies (Daenerys, Yara, Olenna, and Ellaria) talk war strategy. We got to see Grey Worm and Missandei finally act on their feelings.

It was a satisfying episode to be sure, but as it tends to go on Game of Thrones, an upsetting one too. We lost at least two of the Sand Snake daughters, and were left not knowing exactly what’s become of Ellaria or Yara after Theon panicked and jumped ship when given the chance to try to save his sister.

Needless to say, fans on social media had plenty of thoughts about the episode’s dramatic developments. Here are a few of our favorite Twitter hot takes:

Olenna’s pep talk for Dany

If you’re anything like us, you’d watch pretty much anything as long as it had Daenerys or Lady Olenna Tyrell in it. And on Sunday night’s episode, we got an unforgettable scene where Lady Olenna sits the Mother of Dragons down for a little motivational chat. She points out to Dany that Tyrion is a clever man, but that clever men aren’t the way to surviving and thriving as a female ruler in the seven kingdoms. Instead, Olenna urges Dany to look to her own inner fire. “Be a dragon,” she told her. On social media, people took this advice to heart and have apparently made it their mission to make “Be a dragon” be the next big inspirational saying. We can picture the Pinterest quote pages already.

Grey Worm and Missandei get busy

The love scene we saw between Grey Worm and Missandei was long overdue. People have been shipping those two since they first met. Finally, as Grey Worm may be headed off to battle, the usually quiet soldier suddenly revealed his romantic side and people were *into* it. What girl doesn’t want to be told 1) that her crush was always known as the bravest and 2) that she is his one weakness. *Swoon* The scene was particularly tender, too, because of what we know about the Unsullied (a.k.a. they’re eunuchs), and the fact that Missandei wasn’t about to reject the man she digs because of a physical abnormality. When Grey Worm confessed his love, the web (including our favorite live tweeter of events from the Olympics to GoT, SNL‘s Leslie Jones) went wild.

Theon jumping ship

You can’t get much more heartbreaking than the scene at the end of Sunday night’s episode in which Euron captured Yara and gave Theon the (supposed) chance to save her. We all watched in horror as flashes of emotional trauma from the torture he endured as Reek came through in Theon’s eyes and he leapt from the ship instead of aiding his sister. Twitter had a lot to say about the whole interaction, in GIF form, of course.

Other moments

The episode was filled with several more moments worth reflecting on, and people on social media were feeling reflective as usual. Some of the scenes that got the most commentary, from what we saw, included Arya reuniting with her direwolf and Nymeria not joining her on her journey, the violent ship battle in general, and, of course, that disgusting scene where Sam played surgeon and tried to manually slice the greyscale from Jorah’s body.
