SPOILERS!  Wynonna Earp, Syfy’s horror western returns for a second season with an action-packed and heart-wrenching premiere full of mystery and intrigue.

If you aren’t watching SyFy’s adaptation of Image Comics’ Wynonna Earp, YOU SHOULD BE! It’s got crazy hillbilly Revenants (your standard crazy hillbillies but back from the dead), immortal gunslingers, pretty ladies kissing (oh my gay heart), and all kinds of monsters.  Season 2 just premiered, and if you want to get caught up before episode 2, read on.

The show stars Melanie Scrofano as Wynonna Earp, the present day descendant of infamous Wild West lawman, Wyatt Earp.  In the comics, she’s a Special Agent for the Monster Squad, a shady branch of the US Marshals.  She uses Wyatt’s original Peacemaker (a supernatural weapon of immense power) to face off against all sorts of baddies including mummy hit-men for the Egyptian Mafia, zombie mailmen, and undead mastermind Bobo Del Ray (portrayed by Michael Eklund in the show).

Spoilers ahead!

Wynonna Earp, great-granddaughter of Wyatt Earp, arrives in her hometown, Purgatory, investigating the death of her uncle.  She’s kind of the bad-bitch type with a penchant for leather and violence.  Very punk rock.

The town is overrun by undead Revenants led by Bobo Del Ray.  They can’t leave the town because of something called the Ghost River Triangle that borders the whole town.  If they go past the border, WHOOSH!  They burst into flames.  You can take them out with granddaddy Wyatt’s Peacemaker, too, provided you get a clear shot.

Once she’s settled, Wynonna seeks out her younger sister, Waverly.  Waverly is the nerdy type who’s obsessed with the Earp lineage as well as keeping tabs on the Revenants.  Fairly soon into the first season, Waverly starts a relationship with deputy sheriff Nicole Haught (huzzah for lesbianism!)

Soon, Agent Marshall Dolls of the Black Badge Division shows up with an ultimatum for Wynonna.  Join up or go to jail.  Dolls turns out to be a good dude even though a secret drug addiction haunts him from the beginning of the show.

Wynonna finds the Seven, a group of Revenants responsible for killing her father and her older sister, Willa.  (Except Wynonna totally accidentally shot her dad trying to save him.)

Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) shows up looking for blood.  Doc was granted immortality by The Stone Witch (Rayisa Kondracki), but then she screwed him over.  So now he’s gonna try to kill everyone.  Wouldn’t you?

Doc and Wynonna have beef at first, but settle it and get nasty.  They go after the Stone Witch together and bury her in a salt desert.

Wynonna takes out the last of The Seven, but learns that her dad wasn’t the saint she thought he was.  Turns out he was in bed (metaphorically) with Bobo Del Ray.

Wynonna’s not-as-dead-as-we-thought sister shows up out of the blue.  Instead of being dead, she was just brainwashed by a cult.  After she remembers who she is, she tries to get the Peacemaker away from Wynonna.

Wynonna deals, but Waverly is suspicious.  As it so happens, Willa’s in bed (literally) with Bobo Del Ray.  He has a plan to use her to escape the Ghost River Triangle.   Willa also wants to unleash a big baddie on the town, but Wynonna comes to the rescue.  She takes out Bobo and her turncoat sister in one go.

Meanwhile, Dolls has his own issues to deal with.  His boss shows up and tosses his butt in jail.  Apparently, she hates Purgatory and wants to raze it to the ground Hun style.  Wynonna vows to rescue Dolls.

The season ends on a cliffhanger with Waverly pointing a gun at Wynonna and Doc.

Season 2 Premiere

So Waverly wasn’t following in her eldest sister’s footsteps and turning on Wynonna.  Instead, there was a monster behind them!  A little cartoonish, but still fun.  Once the creature’s dispensed, they turn their attention to rescuing Dolls.

The entire Black Badge operation’s been scrubbed from the police station, so they go to Dolls’ hotel room in search of answers.  They get jumped by fellow Black Badge agent, Eliza, but after some explaining, they join forces to spring Dolls.

After some breaking and entering, they learn of Dolls’ whereabouts and his supernatural qualities.  Unfortunately, they get trapped in a stairwell and need rescuing.  Waverly and Nicole (WayHaught) show up and save the day with a really bad English accent, some serious flirting, and a head injury.

Doc pulls a heroic sacrifice-move and locks Wynonna and Eliza out of the rescue.  Using some dynamite as a diversion, Doc and Dolls escape.

Meanwhile, Waverly stares down some monsters, revealing some of her own supernatural qualities.  Wynonna shows up and dispenses some Earp-style justice, and attempt to escape.  Doc gets captured and they all nearly die, but Superior Officer Moody shows up and gives them all some Black Badges of their own.

Except for Eliza.  She gets one in the dome.  The rest join up with Black Badge, and things get really serious.

Episode 2 premieres on June 16 on SyFy.
