Gym Class Heroes are back for a cruise with Train

Gym Class Heroes are one of the top-billed artists for Train’s 5th annual Sail Across the Sun festival. The 2018 trip travels from New Orleans to Cozumel and features over a dozen acts.

Going to sea with your favorite band sounds like a dream. Events like Parahoy! and Train’s annual Sail Across the Sun festival offer fans an intimate, unparalleled experience. Popular acts taking their shows to sea changes the whole perception of how “cool” it is to see a band on a cruise.

On June 7, Sail Across the Sun announced the lineup for its 2018 cruise. At the top of the list is Gym Class Heroes, the pop-rock/hip-hop fusion act best known for its collaborations with labelmates Fall Out Boy and The Academy Is…

The announcement comes as a surprise to fans, who haven’t heard much from the band in recent years.

Gym Class Heroes hasn’t released new music since 2011’s Papercut Chronicles II, which saw major radio play with the breakaway pop hit “Stereo Hearts” (featuring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine).

However, in the six years since, Gym Class Heroes fell out of the limelight. Lead singer Travie McCoy released “Keep On Keepin’ On” with Panic! At the Disco’s Brendon Urie in 2014. Then, in 2015, he released “Golden” with Sia.

The announcement that Gym Class Heroes will be cruising with fans in 2018 suggests that new music may be forthcoming. As of now, that’s just speculation. The band hasn’t made any announcements aside from the festival. Its social media has only retweeted Sail Across the Sun.

Regardless, new music is hopefully imminent. The band could conceivably play tracks from the four records they released on Fueled By Ramen between 2005 and 2011. As Cruel As School Children went gold, after all, and there seems to be a certain level of nostalgia involved in the Sail Across the Sun Festival. Anything is possible.

Train’s Sail Across the Sun festival had its fourth run in February. Acts like Natasha Bedingfield, Matt Nathanson, and Michael Franti joined Train for the cruise. Previous years have featured Shaggy, Ingrid Michaelson, A Great Big World, and Brett Dennen.
