Tom Cruise confirms that Top Gun 2 won’t be called Top Gun 2

Tom Cruise has a name for the Top Gun sequel, and if you think about it, it’s actually a perfect name for the film and its effervescent star.

Tom Cruise is an enigma. Personally, I think he’s one of the coolest dudes, but that’s because I’m (intentionally) only basing my opinion on how much I like his movies. But post-couch jumping debacle, he finds himself in need of rehabilitating his image. Yeah, still. Plus, I’m sure you’ve heard a story or two about what Mr. Cruise does in his free time.

Though that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to put together a decent action movie. Or that he’s not an extremely hard worker.

For example, I’m pretty sure Tom Cruise is the primary driving engine behind the Top Gun sequel. A couple of weeks ago, The Hollywood Reporter asserted that The Mummy would open to a weak $40 million debut in the US. But surprise, surprise — that was before Dark Universe. Currently, the “classic monsters” cinematic universe consists of The Mummy, the uncasted Bride of Frankenstein pic, The Invisible Man with Johnny Depp, Frankenstein’s Monster with Javier Bardem, and a possible Werewolf flick with its eyes on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

So on the heels of this otherwise big news, Cruise is using his spotlight to his advantage and floating out the idea of a Top Gun sequel. Bolstered by Cruise’s own enthusiasm (or so it seems), the film continues to look more and more like a real thing.

And even officially has a title now. Because apparently, Tom thinks numbers are lousy.

"“It’s not going to be called Top Gun 2. It’s called Top Gun: Maverick. I didn’t want a number, you know what I mean? You don’t want a number; you don’t need a number.”"

That’s about as Tom Cruise-y a statement you can make while keeping both feet firmly planted on the ground.

Combined with Dark Universe and his ongoing Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise is in the perfect position to breathe life back into a film that debuted more than three decades ago.

I know I called Tom Cruise an enigma, but perhaps, a better word for him is, in fact, maverick.
