David Tennant and Billie Piper will reunite as the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler in a brand new series of Doctor Who audio dramas from Big Finish.
Big news for Doctor Who fans — the Tenth Doctor and Rose are coming back! Sort of. David Tennant and Billie Piper will indeed reprise their famous Who roles. But this time, it’s for a new series of audio dramas for Big Finish.
Big Finish already makes tons of Who-related audio content, including dramas about the classic Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Doctors. They even recently announced a brand new, audio-only season of Torchwood. But the company only produced its first series of modern Doctor Who stories in 2016, with Tennant on board. That inaugural set of Tenth Doctor Adventures featured former companion Catherine Tate, and its stories took place during Season 4.
Now, Piper will re-team with Tennant for the audio series’ second installment. Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures, Vol. 2 will tell three new stories from Season 2. This not only marks Piper’s Big Finish debut, but the first time she and Tennant have worked together since the 2013 Doctor Who 50th anniversary special “The Day of the Doctor”. Well, “worked with” is a strong term. Though both appeared in the anniversary installment, they didn’t really interact directly. (Piper didn’t play Rose then; she played “The Moment”. And only John Hurt’s War Doctor could see her. Sigh.)
The three stories are “Infamy of the Zaross”, by John Dorney, “Sword of the Chevalier” by Guy Adams, and “Cold Vengeance” by Matt Fitton. And they feature everything from an alien invasion of Earth, to alien slavers who kidnap humans in 1791, to the return of classic villains the Ice Warriors.
In other happy casting news: Camille Codri will also be back as Rose’s mom, Jackie Tyler. And Nicholas Briggs will voice both Ice Lord Hasskor and Warrior Slaan.
Listen to the series’ trailer below.
“Getting David and Billie back together was definitely on my bucket list,” said executive producer Jason Haigh-Ellery. “Two wonderful actors who created an era of Doctor Who which is so fondly remembered and brought a different aspect of the relationship between the Doctor and his companion to the fore – love, both platonic and unrequited. It’s great to have the Tenth Doctor and Rose back again!”
Not sure I entirely agree that anything about the love between the Doctor and Rose was platonic or unrequited. But your mileage may vary, I guess.
Next: Torchwood is finally coming back! (Sort of.)
Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor Adventures, Vol.2 will be available beginning in November 2017. You can snag them all as individual releases or purchase a limited edition box set.
