Marvel Cinematic Universe Has An Uncertain Future, According To Kevin Feige

This phase of Marvel Comic Universe is either getting a face lift or coming to a close, but which is which? Here’s what Kevin Feige has to say.

One of the most successful movie franchises in history is either getting a face lift or coming to a close of sorts, according to a recent article on Collider by Adam Chitwood. The story, which included quotes from a recent interview between Steve Weintraub and Kevin Feige, broke down the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU for short) into “phases.” Well, what Feige told Weintraub was that the forthcoming untitled Avengers 4 film is not the fourth phase of this franchise, but rather the beginning of a whole different thing… perhaps.

Chitwood makes mention of the fact that there will be some veteran departures soon —namely Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth. Ergo, their replacements are probably being hashed out in this “new thing,” as Feige described it.

To me, this all makes sense. One, from an actor’s perspective, we can’t honestly expect Downey Jr. to dedicate over a decade of his life to Iron Man. From a consumer perspective, Marvel will have a hard time holding their audience’s attention with the same three or four white dudes indefinitely. As we reach the end of what Chitwood and Feige call “Phase 3,” Marvel is offered an exciting opportunity to inject some new blood — and some diversity — into the superhero lineup. In my humble opinion, Black Panther and Captain Marvel are much-needed additions to the MCU. Let’s get some people of color and some ladies up in there.

Also, who knows what’s going to happen with The Avengers after the fourth installment comes out? Comic book universes splinter out into many different branches, play with timelines, and re-hash the same character’s experiences over and over again. Why should it be any different with film? I bet in five or ten years we’re going to have to revisit Iron Man and Captain America, among others, mostly because these studios have to remake these films to maintain licenses for these characters and story lines.
