The ladies of Litchfield have a lot on their trays these days, not to mention a prison riot right under their noses. Netflix is giving us our first look at Orange is the New Black Season 5.

Tensions at Litchfield Penitentiary are at an all-time high. Inmates are still reeling from the death of beloved inmate Poussey (Samira Wiley), not to mention what seems like thousands of other injustices of our justice system. Netflix’s hit series Orange is the New Black is set to return for our streaming pleasure this June, and now we’re getting a glimpse of the chaotic first moments of Season 5.

Not So Quiet Riot

When we last left off, a full-scale inmate takeover of the prison was underway. Tensions finally boiled over after Poussey’s death, resulting in the scene we see above. Dayanara Diaz (Dascha Polanco) is holding a gun to CO Humprhey’s (Michael Torpey) head, ready to fire at any minute while the rest of the inmates egg her on. The tense moment ended Season 4, and it looks like we’re picking up right in the heat of that moment.

What strikes me personally is how nonchalant Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) seem to be acting. They were present as an inmate kicked over a flaming garbage can, but seem to be realizing in this moment that a riot broke out. Of course, we hear a very Piper-esque question come forth, which causes her and Vause to make a run for it.

That’s neither here nor there. Daya has this man on his knees. And although Humphrey is arguably one of the most sadistic characters in the show, seeing him utterly helpless with an indecisive Daya above him is unnerving. The inmates’ taunts grow louder, and no one can hear Daya’s need for quiet over the chaos. The short scene ends with a single gunshot.

Where does Daya shoot? The wall? The ceiling? The ground in front of Humphrey? Or will we see him with a bullet in his head? Whatever happened, it was shocking enough to shut all the inmates up, and is sure to start Season 5 off with a bang. The episodes have been increasingly darker as time goes on, so we’re sure to settle in for another wild ride.
