Power Rangers Cast Wants a Female Green Ranger in Next Film

After the end of Power Rangers, fans can only wonder who will join the team next. While no one’s been cast, the current Power Rangers hope it’s a girl.

(Spoiler Warning: This article contains discusses the end credits sequence of the Power Rangers film.)

Power Rangers enjoyed a pretty decent opening this weekend and delivered a surprisingly sweet film. As Saban revitalized their franchise with a new group of teens who were all as troubled as they were compassionate, the film ended on a particularly high note.

The mid-credits sequence saw all the kids return to detention. After a few awesome note passes and revealing the design of their iconic bolt symbol, the teacher takes roll call and announces a new addition — Tommy Oliver. The camera zooms in on a lone desk with a green jacket hanging over the chair.

Of course, Tommy Oliver is the name of the original Green Ranger that went from the series’ villain to the eventual White Ranger. Arguably, Tommy is one of the most popular characters in the entire franchise.

But since the new Power Rangers seeks to elevate the original material, it may be time to re-write Tommy Oliver’s legacy.

While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, it appears that the Power Rangers cast is totally down with overhauling the character. In fact, they totally support making the Green Ranger a girl.

As Dacre Montgomery, who plays Jason Scott / the Red Ranger, explained:

"“A lot of the cast and I have discussed that we think it should be a girl. It makes it even: three girls, three boys.” Plus, he also added, “It’s left blank. It’s a cliff-hanger. Whoever you’re going to drop into that position — whether it’s a girl — it’s inevitably going to create drama. It’ll be interesting to drop that drama into it and see how we all relate to it and work with it.”"

If you think about it, we did have a female Green Ranger because of Elizabeth Banks’ role in the film. But since she considers herself primarily as the disfigured Rita Repulsa, I guess it doesn’t count. And though the film named Tommy Oliver, it would be cool if they made Tommy short for a girl’s name. Like … Tamara.

Oh, wow, look, I just did half the work.
