Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Hogwarts Library features new, North American creatures and Pottermore has released exclusive art of the beasts.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (the book, not the movie) is being updated! The new edition of the wizarding textbook features a forward from Newt Scamander and a host of new creatures for Potterheads to discover.

Pottermore commissioned artist Andy Singleton to created 3D forms of six beasts featured in the new book and revealed the new artwork on their site.

The six new creatures to the book have all been mentioned in J.K. Rowling’s posts about the American Wizarding school Ilvermorny.

The new beasts are:

Snallygaster

The Snallygaster is part bird and part reptile, like a dinosaur (complete with feathers!). It’s distantly related to the Occamy, another bird like creature that was featured in the movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Thunderbird

The Thunderbird is an Ilvermorny house animal that was also featured in Fantastic Beasts. Newt had captured a Thunderbird from Egypt and was trying to return it to its natural habitat in Arizona. The bird resembles a Hippogriff, but with large wings that can create storms as it flies.

Wampus Cat

Another Ilvermorny house animal, the Wampus Cat is a dangerous feline. The creature is marked as ‘XXXXX’ in Newt’s notes, meaning it can kill wizards. The cat has the powers of hypnosis and Legilimency and can’t be domesticated.

Hidebehind

It may look like a friendly sloth, but the aptly named Hidebehind (because it hides behind anything and everything to conceal itself) can be dangerous in attacks, particularly to muggles.

Horned Serpent

The Horned Serpent is another Ilvermorny house animal, one that the school’s founder Isolt Sayre could understand. Shavings from the creature’s horn can be used to create wands.

Hodag

Hodag is a frog-like animal with red eyes and long fangs, and is approximately the size of a big dog.
