Legion Season One Episode Five Recap: Chapter Five

This week’s episode of Legion had us wondering what David was really up to and the power of his ability to go into division 3.

Legion continues to show us how amazing it is week after week. And this fifth chapter was no different. Trying to figure out if they were in the real world or in David’s world, Melanie and her crew of mutants try and figure out what is happening in the world of David Haller.

Kerry and Cary

At the end of last episode, we did’t know what was to come of Kerry when she fought off multiple men at once. The beginning of this episode gave us what we wanted. It showed us Cary morphing back into Kerry to save her.
Their relationship is very interesting because the two are the same person so they clearly can’t live without each other but it also runs deeper than that. They are so close that it is a different relationship entirely. Not even one completely dependent on survival.

Syd and David

In David’s dream world, Syd and David can be together. They can touch and be with one another because it is the way he dreams it to be. Syd doesn’t have her power and the two can connect in a way like they never have before.

But that proves to be dangerous. In David’s mind, Syd and David can have sex without worrying about Syd’s power. But then Syd decided to reveal her strange backstory with her first time she had sex.

In it, she talks about switching to be her mother so that she could sleep with her mother’s boyfriend. But, at the time, her power wasn’t as strong as it is now and so she ended up changing back into herself midway through.

“Promise me if we get lost, we get lost together.” Before David vanished into division 3, Syd begged him to stay with her. It lasted for all of a few minutes before he left her behind.

He Can Bring Him Back

Melanie realizes that David may be the key to bring back Oliver Bird from the world where David was trapped. Oliver ended up helping David when he was confused, helped him find his way back.

But as David puts it, Oliver creates his own reality now. The problem is that David also vanishes into division 3 whenever he wants. Which doesn’t sit well with Melanie since she has her own plan to use David to help her.

David and his Power

This episode, more than any before, has shown us that David is slowly becoming power hungry. Everything he does is to benefit him and what he wants to do. He will willingly use his power to take himself and Syd to this other world but isn’t really helping everyone else as he was before.

He has become rightfully selfish and it is the first time he’s in control of his own mind. But that power comes with responsibility and he is seemingly abusing it. Everything he is doing is for the thrill of it and not to help whatever cause Melanie has.

The Search for Amy

David and his sister have an interesting relationship on the show. He seems to always be searching for her, trying to save Amy. When in flashbacks, it is as if she is always protecting him. They clearly love each other and are close but it is a confusing relationship.

But all he wants is to save her. She’s in this because of him and he wants to protect her.

The Other Consciousness

David has another consciousness in his brain. So in a way, he is a schizophrenic. The weird creature thing we’ve been seeing is part of his consciousness that takes his power and runs. That controls things in David’s mind that he does not want.

It is something created from his childhood that has turned against who he is and they’re slowly learning that David can’t really control it and that’s why they couldn’t see it when they were in his mind.

The Rainbow Connection

This may just be a me thing but this is one of the best songs in the world. And the way that David sings the song while playing bango and crying is really heartbreaking. He doesn’t know what is going on in his own mind.

He can’t control his other consciousness and it leads to him reaching out to Syd and showing her where he has returned. But with that, we get this beautiful moment.

You Were Adopted

David knows that his sister has a secret but she won’t tell. So he uses Lenny and Benny and all his abilities to his advantage to make her crack. Eventually she does and tells him that he is adopted. Which, if you were fans of the comic, you know who his real father is.

David’s House

The minute everyone gets to David’s house, it is clear they are in his world. They cannot speak or hear each other and they’re going into his house basically blind. That creepy child thing that kind of looks like Hitler ran around a lot and wanted Syd to follow it.

So of course she did. But then there was this amazing scene where Kerry, Cary, Melanie, and Ptonomy walk through the house with a cool song playing. Unfortunately, it was ruined by the Eye joining them and making everyone’s lives more miserable.

But then things get crazy when Lenny/Benny/Creepy guy takes over David and is causing mayhem for everyone involved.

In Conclusion

Honestly I thought we’d learn that this had all been in David’s head the entire time but then just the ending is in his head. Again, much like the show is designed to do, we are meant to learn things just as David and the crew do.

But that means things can get a little confusing. Mainly about what is real and what is not. Especially with the ending with them all in a therapy session.
