Stung by a Wasp: Evangeline Lilly Calls out DC Films for Being Too Serious

The DC films are often critiqued for their dark themes, and now, Ant-Man’s Evangeline Lilly calls out the franchise for taking themselves too seriously.

We get it. DC has a lot of problems. Basically, they need a bit of an overhaul, from top to bottom. But part of their deal is being an opposing creative force to Marvel’s otherwise happy-go-lucky B-squad of white superheroes. Honestly, Marvel’s just a factory. They churn out cookie-cutter movies left and right. And considering that Ant-Man is one of the Marvel films that can’t even boast being in the top 10 at the box office, it’s easy to see how one of its stars might be inclined to poke some bears.

To which I say: Evangeline Lilly, stay in your lane, girl.

With a hat tip to Bleeding Cool, it appears that while speaking at Emerald City Comicon, Lilly folded her criticism of Warner Bros. into the topic of Marvel.

As she spoke about how she ended up in Ant-Man, Lilly admitted that she didn’t feel overwhelmed to appear in a “stupid superhero movie.” But the more she investigated the project, the more excited she felt about joining a project with “guys who are making really cool superheroes who don’t take themselves too seriously.”

Unlike “DC Films.”

I’m perfectly okay with Lilly stating her opinion. But I hate seeing people use Marvel as a platform to bash DC again and again. Like, they’re two separate things and rightfully so. When you’re talking about Marvel, talk about Marvel. They are very good at what they do. We get it. However, they’re not infallible as a studio and let’s be real, they’re a little predictable. It gets old.

Further, I bet Lilly could’ve given a pointed look to the audience and everyone would’ve understood where she was getting it. Instead, she called out DC films and my fangirl ears started ringing.
